Promising Sunshine State TE recruit knows South Carolina will make his top list

June 23, 2016

Zach Sheffer’s second trip to South Carolina went much better than the first.

The promising 6-foot-2.5, 218-pound tight end from Nease High School (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) visited South Carolina on Saturday for the Will Muschamp Football Camp, nearly a year after the 2018 prospect experienced his first camp in Columbia.

“The first time I went to South Carolina, I was just hitting up a bunch of different camps … this time, since they actually wanted me to come, it was a whole lot better than the last time,” Sheffer said.

Muschamp’s staff offered the rising junior in May, joining Auburn, Tennessee and Michigan. Sheffer also reports offers from Boston College, Duke and Virginia Tech.

“I’m still checking out all of the schools that have offered me. I haven’t been able to go to all the schools yet, so that’s what I plan on doing, going to schools and seeing how I like it,” he said. “I don’t know when I’ll make a top list of schools, but I do know South Carolina will be up there.”

Before returning to South Carolina, Sheffer camped at Georgia and hit the Michigan satellite camp in Jacksonville.

The visit to South Carolina afforded him the opportunity to meet Muschamp and Gamecocks tight ends coach Pat Washington.

“I really like coach Washington as a coach, because I got to see how he coaches, just by him working with me,” Sheffer said. “I know a tight end there, Hayden Hurst, so I was talking to him about (Washington) and he said he really likes him as a coach. I really like that aspect of it.”

As a sophomore, Sheffer caught 26 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns.
