When the phone rings or vibrates with a message for the nation’s No. 2 tight end Chris Clark, lately the text or call is coming from a committed quarterback trying to lure the Avon (Conn.) Old Farms blue-chipper to his respective school.
Chris Clark will make his college decision in July at The Opening.
As hard as it’s going to be for the 6-foot-6, 247-pound Clark to say no to all the other programs when he announces his college commitment this summer at The Opening, it’s also going to be difficult to tell these quarterbacks, now his friends, no he won’t be playing with them as well.
Arizona State commit Brady White, Michigan commit Alex Malzone, Michigan State pledge Brian Lewerke, Ohio State bound Joe Burrow and South Carolina verbal Lorenzo Nunez have been keeping in regular touch with Clark.
“That’s about the main guys I chat with a lot,” Clark said.
While the Sun Devils aren’t really in play for Clark leading up to his July decision, the Buckeyes, Gamecocks, Spartans and Wolverines definitely are.
“I like all those guys a lot,” Clark said. “They’re all my dudes. They’re all really cool kids. I actually never met any of them in person, but they’re all going to be there when I visit. It will be cool to meet them all in person. They all have good pitches and they’re all really good quarterbacks.”
Clark will visit Ohio State on June 17, Michigan State on June 18 and Michigan on June 19. He’s in the process of trying to setup a trip to South Carolina and talked with head coach Steve Spurrier on Wednesday.
247Sports asked Clark to talk about each quarterback courting him. The players are listed alphabetically.
Joe Burrow: “With Ohio state I was curious to see who they would get. I thought they were going to get (Penn State commit Brandon) Wimbush and I was (angry) about that. It would’ve been awesome to play with him. When I found out Joe committed there he hit me up on Twitter. I think he’s an under-the-radar prospect. I hadn’t heard much about him before he committed to Ohio State, and watching film of him and talking to Urban Meyer about him, I’m sure he’s their guy. He compares to Alex Smith, that’s what Coach Meyer was telling me. Joe is confident in what he can do at Ohio State. He’s excited to come up for the visit. Ohio State, it’s been hot and cold with them, but I’m feeling good with them now. I really wanted them to get a quarterback with all the tools in terms of my class, a guy that can get the ball downfield, and I think he’s a guy that can do that.”
Brian Lewerke: “He’s been really cool. I like talking to him a lot. He’s a really good quarterback. Michigan State got a really good one with him. He’s a good guy for the class. I really enjoy talking to the Michigan State coaches. They’re a school that wasn’t around in the beginning, but I’ve been able to build relationship with Coach (Jim) Bollman and Coach (Mark) Dantonio and Coach (Pat) Narduzzi, who recruits my area. They’re a staff that has a toughness about them and they’re style of football. Lewerke as quarterback is an awesome guy, and he told me I could be that bigger type tight end that can do a lot of stuff for them.”
Alex Malzone: “I really like him a lot. My dad likes him too. Watching him based off film he’s a really good quarterback. He comes off as a really good leader for their class. He’s a proven winner, won a couple state championships. He just tells me Coach (Brady) Hoke and Coach (Doug) Nussmeier care about me, and he’s recruiting me real hard. He’s said that I’d be a huge piece to the class and that we could do a lot as a duo.”
Lorenzo Nunez “I think he’s really cool. I really hope he gets invited to The Opening. We’re just talking a lot more now. He’s been in my ear a little bit. That class they’re building a really good class. They got that d-end yesterday Arden Key, and he’s been talking to me too. I’m intrigued by South Carolina and I want to visit.”
Clark originally committed to North Carolina and says the Tar Heels are still kind of in the mix. Their quarterback commit is Anthony Ratliff.
“I did talk to him a lot when I was committed,” Clark said. “I haven’t talked to him in a while. He was a cool guy.”
In late-April, Clark told 247Sports Michigan was his slight leader. He's since backed way from naming a front runner.
