Rattler turning heads at the Saints' minicamp

On the roster: Derek Carr, Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler

On the outs: N/A

Rattler had several nice drives against the Tennessee Titans but Haener has the better body of work through the summer. It's worth retaining all three quarterbacks and keeping all options on the table.

Yeah and I think Rattler is in a better position than Shaw was at Cleveland/Chicago from a team quality standpoint. It was so ironic he got hurt when he wasn't running.

That DL that broke Connor's leg was a complete idiot.
Connor didn't have the body for the NFL. He got injured 2X and missed 2 seasons being on the IR.
It's unfortunate, but some of the best players never make it due to injuries (Marcus).

Rattler will get his 1st NFL start this week. If he can take the 3-5 Saints and beat the 5-3 Bucs, he should be considered for more starts.
If he can go out there and play like he did against UT back in 22, he will win this game.
Tampa Bay has 16 sacks this season. I am sure they will be after the rookie to try and shake him up. But Rattler is good at getting away from a rush and making them pay.
I don't watch much NFL, but I do watch Deebo some and I plan to watch this game too.

I had the standings wrong. I had included preseason games. Currently Saints are 2-3 while Bucs are 3-2.
Yes, Carr, the Saints starter got hurt but may be back in a week or two.
I just hope Rattler plays good enough to make them think about it some before they pull him back from starting.

When was the last time we had a Gamecock QB earn the start for an NFL game? I don;t think Connor Shaw ever did (except maybe a preseason game.)

Shaw started the last game of the year for Cleveland one season. Maybe 2014 or 2015 season. Johnny Football and the 2nd string guy were injured so Shaw was called up from the practice squad.

Now that you mention it, I think I do remember hearing about this.

The Saints play 2 games in 10 days, expect him to at least start 2 games if he plays decent based on the local Louisiana radio personalities for the Saints... my favorite being Bobby "The Cajun Cannon" Hebert

They play Sunday and again on Thursday. 2 games in 5 days.

The Saints/Bucs game will be at noon on FOX. The Panthers play the Falcons at 4:25, so FOX won't make us watch a crappy Panthers team on Sunday.

The Saints/Broncos game will be on Prime Video, so I can't watch that one.

PFF on the difference between Saints QB’s Spencer Rattler, Derek Carr (usatoday.com)

Sikkema joined ESPN’s Mina Kimes on her podcast, “The Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny.” Both analysts looked at how poor South Carolina’s offensive line was during Rattler’s last two seasons. As PFF’s lead draft analyst, Sikkema discussed Rattler through the lens of a prospect. This is still fair as Rattler hasn’t taken a snap yet.

“That’s something I don’t think he got enough credit for. He stayed calm under a ton of pressure,” Sikkema said. The Saints offensive line is dealing with a lot of injuries, and that will naturally lead to some breakdowns during the game.

When those breakdowns occur, there’s trust Rattler won’t panic. That is a weakness of Carr’s. The interception on the first drive against the Chiefs is just one example of this.

To be crystal clear, Rattler possessing the trait doesn’t mean he’s a better quarterback than Carr. It’s a straightforward statement. Based on his experiences in college, Rattler may handle poor blocking better than Derek Carr has.

The quarterback won the starting job for the Gamecocks in 2022 and had a decent start to the season, but finished strong with upset wins over Tennessee and Clemson en route to a Gator Bowl appearance. The next season South Carolina finished 5-7, but Rattler had a breakout campaign, throwing a career-high 3,186 yards while setting the school’s single-season record for completions and completion percentage.

Those single-season records were lost in the mediocrity of our 5-7 season.

Considering he had very little protection in the pocket, and had to throw so many passes while running, it is hard to say how good he really is. It is not easy to throw the ball accurate while you are running. Give him a little time to look down the field and be able to throw the ball flat footed and he may be one of the best QBs ever.

They play Sunday and again on Thursday. 2 games in 5 days.
So they played KC on Monday night football, they play again on Sun and on Thurs so 2 games in 10 days... this was him talking on Tuesday after they knew Carr was most likely out 2 weeks and if they played on Sun instead of Thursday he could be ready so the named starter would most likely get 2 starts
