Realistic expectations for 2022

Now that we’ve wrapped up what was a very successful 2021 campaign, I’m interested to see what people think the goal for 2022 should be. I know that some smart **** on here is going to say “win all our games should always be the goal“ but we all know what reasonable expectations look like and what unreasonable expectations look like.

With Rattler coming in, I’ve got to think even in the most conservative minds, that’s an instant big boost to the offense. Elite quarterback play is the biggest key to making a jump in college football. Just look at Clemson for an easy example. I’m not expecting Rattler to necessarily be elite next year, but he has elite talent, there is no doubt. If he can be even 80% of what he was at Oklahoma his first year, I think we will certainly be better on offense by significant margin.

The biggest question on offense going into next year is clearly was the bowl just a flash in the pan or was it a sign of real progress? Satterfield‘s body of work this season has me pretty worried to be honest, but credit where it’s due, he called a very good bowl game. Looks like he’s coming back in 2022, so we might as well strap in and hope he can make big strides with Rattler at the helm. Hopefully we can grab a couple good portal receivers and maybe an offensive lineman somewhere. Even with Satterfield, I find it hard to believe we will be worse overall on offense next year than we were this year.

Defensively we lose some pieces, most notably Enagbare, Ellis, and Foster, but I think Clayton White proved this year that we are in very good hands on that side of the ball. In year two of that system, I expect that we will be at least as good as we were this
year, if not a little better.

With all that being said, I think the SEC east is wide open behind Georgia next year. Tennessee will be good as will Kentucky. I think Missouri is very beatable next year and Florida will look totally different. Our schedule is actually pretty favorable early. At Arkansas and at Kentucky are two massive games early that will tell us a lot.

At this point, I think the fair baseline expectation should be 7-5 with a chance to win 8 in a bowl. That could change given how the portal goes, but that would be progress from year one and I think would constitute a good season  although perhaps not a great one.

I am sticking with 6-7 wins and that would still show progress in my mind.   I think we overachieved this year so tempering my expectations. While I think we got better the other teams did as well for the most part.

I think 8 wins is very possible. My main concern is the offense line. We need a major improvement there. I am encouraged that a lot of our draft eligible guys are coming back. That tells me the culture is changing. The games I really want to see us win are Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri. Beating Clemson after six years would be nice too.

Our schedule is tough as hell. I’m going with 7 wins and a bowl win to get us to 8.

Most rebuilds start with the defense and Shane has been mainly a defensive coach in his career before becoming the HC here.

The defense was a little inconsistent this season, but Coach White always owned the mistakes and bounced back most of the time.

So I feel our defense with whoever the new starter group ends up being will be solid by the middle of next season.

However, I just don't have the same warm and fuzzy feeling about the offense right now because it was just so bad and has no identity.

This past season has been a first-year, first-time HC and his new staff learning what works and what doesn't while trying to evaluate players they have never coached before this season.  We all hoped it would be better than it was, but realistically it was ugly and inconsistent at times like the first year of a rebuild usually is.

I am very pessimistic about a "Pro-style offense" because nothing like that has really worked in recent seasons.  An OC will come in here and take 3 years to recruit for it, but the wins don't materialize and said coordinator is gone.

I think you have to do whatever it takes to win with what you have before you can be another Bama, because that what Saban had to do when he first got to Bama.

So I will say 8 or 9 wins is possible if Shane and Satt figure out a way to make the offense work better.

I will also add that the next few months are probably going to be awkward and uncomfortable for some of the coaches and players as Shane brings in the new recruits that he thinks will give us the edge to win more games.

Recruiting is just part of the college game, but realistically some players are going to get their feelings hurt in the coming months when they realize Shane's goal is to improve and nothing is set in stone.

Here is how the SEC faired in bowl games:

We were the only one out of 7 unranked SEC teams to win their bowl game.

I expect Shane to have a really good recruiting class by February, especially if he wins a COTY award.

That will bode well for us in the 2022 season.

6-8 wins is my target for this team.  OL has to play better and Satt has to call a better offense.  I hope with Rattler, our offense will be better.  Yes Satt called a great bowl game, but that was 1 game out 13 IMO.  If he is going to stay (which I think he is), we need an offensive identity.  I think some WR and RB depth are needed as well, especially WR.  On D, we have to replace some talent.  LB need to be much better.  Who will our kicker be?  Replacing Parker White is almost impossible.

Yeah, I'm thinking 7-5 prior to the bowl game. Maybe 8-4 if the OL really improves. I think we've got the skill players to be successful, but not so sure the OL will give them any time to do anything.

I would expect that Mitch Jeter is the favorite to be the next place kicker. Dude can kick the ball a long ways, but I don't know how accurate he is.

I'd be good with 8 wins and showing solid, steady improvement at all positions. I'm hoping the portal and the final recruiting drive will be good for us.  I'm very happy to have something to look forard to this year! I love the good publicity!

Think we win 7 regular season. I think this is going to be a slow build, which is fine by me. I’m in no rush, I’m a Gamecock fan lol

Fix the offense.... :animated-smileys-angry-017:

Run the zone read....use Dak if you have to.
