Recapping a busy Thursday, looking ahead to the weekend

June 16, 2017

Thursday, June 15

If you took Thursday off from tracking South Carolina recruiting, you missed a lot. An awful lot, though some of it was to be expected.

Three-star 2018 tackle Wyatt Campbell (Lugoff, S.C.) went #SpursUp and pledged to the Gamecocks.

Four-star 2018 quarterback Tyler Shough (Chandler, Ariz.) committed to North Carolina.

Twenty-four hours ago, both destinations were sort of to be expected, if you’ve been keeping up for the last week or so.

South Carolina sent out a handful offers, including one to 3-star tackle Raiqwon O’Neal, who was offered to play on the defensive side of the ball by Will Muschamp. His big day was just getting started by the time he got back home in Conway, S.C.

Michigan offered. Penn State soon followed.

If you had a better Thursday than O’Neal, who’s from Conway (S.C.) High School, congratulations.

The surprise

Three-star tight end Gavin Schoenwald (Nashville, Tenn.) announced his commitment to Vanderbilt shortly after Shough pledged to the Tar Heels.

Schoenwald was scheduled to visit South Carolina on Saturday.

Change of plans

It’s the nature of the business. Things change quickly when it comes to recruiting.

At this time 24 hours ago, 2018 South Carolina offensive line commitment Maxwell Iyama was expected to visit with his teammate, 2019 defensive end Joseph Anderson. Neither made it to campus.

Four-star defensive end Ani Izuchukwu was a maybe. He made it to Columbia, along with a host of other 4-star recruits from Tennessee.

Decision day

After months of anticipation and SpursUp Surveillance entries, 4-star quarterback Dakeron Joyner is set to announce his commitment at 4:30 on Sunday. Joyner will reveal his commitment in honor of his late father, Damond Alton Joyner.

South Carolina and North Carolina State are the finalists for Joyner.

SEC Country will be live from Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C. The announcement is planned — tentatively, because it is recruiting — to be streamed on Facebook Live.

Happy Father’s Day, Gamecock fans.
