Reports: Five-star Gamecocks recruiting target will announce decision in coming days
July 22, 2018
South Carolina football made its impression on five-star Georgia defensive tackle Travon Walker on a visit in early June.
Now USC’s staff will reportedly soon find out if the pitch was compelling enough.
Walker retweeted reports from Rivals’ Chad Simmons and 247Sports’ Rusty Mansell that he’ll make his announcement at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday in a televised ceremony at his school. As of last week, he said his top five were South Carolina, Clemson, hometown Georgia, Auburn and Alabama.
He said early playing time would factor in.
“That’s one thing I am looking into, if I can go in and play right away,” Walker said. “I am still going to have to go in right away and compete with other players, but still, I’m going to have a chance to go in and play, and prove that I am the best.”
A 6-foot-5, 275-pound cousin of South Carolina players D.J. and Dylan Wonnum, Walker called USC an upcoming program after his visit.
He’s the No. 24 player in the 247 composite rankings, the second-best defensive tackle in the country and the sixth-best player in Georgia.
As a sophomore, he had 70 tackles, five sacks and four forced fumbles.
