SC native Des Kitchings is in negotiations with Gamecock to replace Thomas Brown as RB coach

I’m not excited about Kitchings. NC State let him go. But if Muschamp hires him I do hope he does good.

From what I’ve heard and read from experts, this is a big hire.  He was made a scapegoat this year for a decaying NC state program.  He is supposed to be an elite recruiter with roots in NC and SC and it’s surrounding areas.  I think a RB coach needs to be an elite recruiter and solid X&O guy.  I think he surpasses that need from reports and our O can use the fresh voice.

New name to follow so Kitchings maybe not or maybe both one goes over to WR position.

LSU/Asst. Head Coach/Running Backs/Recruiting Coordinator

Tommie Robinson bio

IMO  John Settle or Robert Gillespie would be improvements but Des Kitchings is a step backwards

Settle seems “settled in” at Wisconsin. He’d be a great choice, quite honestly if I was going to hire someone from Wisconsin’s staff it’d be the OL Coach.

Likewise, Gillespie would be a good choice, but I don’t think we’ll go wrong getting Des. Good recruiter, good coach. And with the state of NC apparently having a lot of prospects the next couple of years, connections with NC HS coaches can’t hurt.

Its easy to criticize Tanner for hiring Muschamp, and it’s easy to criticize who Muschamp is rumored to be looking at to hire, but in both cases it’s highly doubtful anyone here knows the real story of how many back channel communications go on.  Muschamp could very well have already contacted half a dozen highly regarded RB coaches, or he may have contacted two. And in reverse, he may have received multiple calls from RB coaches, and he’s picking who he thinks is the best for the job.

It’s not as bad on this forum, but on others it seems trendy to be highly negative. I think we need to let it play out. If it’s Kitchings I think we’ll be fine. Brown was a very good RB coach, but his history is that of a job hopper. Hopefully whoever the choice is does a great job, and is here for a while for stability.

Its also being rumored that Robinson from a LSU is in play, I’d assume for RB coach. If true, he would be a major upgrade and a major coup for Muschamp.

This is right on the money. I'm not sure I completely agree with the 'scapegoat' call...even though I get exactly what you are saying...but NC State did not just fire Des.  Des has been the best recruiter in the state of NC for the better part of a decade...NC State has had ten 1,000 yard rushers over their entire hundreds of years history...he recruited/coached 4 of them...3 in a row up until this past year when they were forced to play three freshman...all good.

The Co-OC gig was some attempt to fill the Drinkwitz void...with the youngest team in the country...that just didn't work out as well as they  hoped but there were a lot of factors that lead to that...it wasn't the play calling. However, when NC State hired Tim Beck from Texas...after he was demoted there...Kitchens had an issue with going back to being 'just' the RB coach at NC State. In 2016 Kitchens had actually turned down the head job at Furman to stay and I guess after he was demoted as part of what were wholesale changes at State...they cleaned house...they had simply reached the point where it was time for a change on both sides.

But again...NC State has dominated recruiting in NC since he became the head of recruiting for the Wolfpack...his guys produce and he send guys into the NFL...that alone makes him my choice.

Fun sorta unrelated fact: If you count Russell Wilson...who finished his career at Wisconsin...at one point last year there were 5 starting QB's from NC State in the NFL...Wilson, Rivers, Brissett, Finley and Glennon...that's crazy

After checking out the LSU boards there may be some legs to this...I'm basing this mostly on the idiocy of them claiming they have been trying to fire him anyway despite the fact that he is currently their assistance head coach, recruiting coordinator and running back coach for their National Championship team...they are even claiming he isn't a very good recruiter...despite the fact that LSU was ranked #5 last year and #1 this year under his leadership and the year prior to coming  to LSU was named recruiter of the year in the PAC-12

He doesn't stick around long but he is a great coach with a shit load of experience at the absolute highest levels...Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, So Cal Trojans, LSU Tigers...we will see but if it is between Kitchings and Robinson then good on Boom for continuing to impress.

Orgeron has come out and said they already have his replacement if he leaves.  Sounds a little bitter to me,  so no telling.

...well that sounds unprofessional. So the idea is they had a fabulous season in spite of Robinson?

Coach O has had some losses from his staff. I’d say it’s expected when you have success, but it also makes you wonder what’s going on there?

Particularly with Robinson....big question is, did Muschamp contact him, or did he reach out to Muschamp?

I don’t think it’s a money thing, LSU has more than we do.

The more I read the better I feel about the options being discussed here...that being said...I'm still a Des Kitchings guy. Was quite simply the best recruiter in NC for the last 5 or 6 years...super smart...SC born and breed...puts guys in the NFL...turned down the Furman head caching job to stay with the plan at State...OC experience...best RB coach NC State has ever had...again...NC State has had ten 1,000 yard rushers in their history...Des recruited/coached 4 of them including going back to back to back up until this past year where he was forced to play three true freshman...two of which are going to be 1,000 yards rushers before its all said and done and once they get the QB situation back under control and can stay on the field. I think NC State had the youngest team in the country last year after sending a ton of top round draft picks to the league over the last few cycles.

Either way I'm looking forward to wrapping this up...beyond impressed with the class Boom pulled off and so far with Rocker, Hughes...Des or Robinson at RBC...and a WRC still to add...not forgetting how good of a hire Coach Jack and the S&C team was...and its pretty amazing how well Boom has done after the season we suffered through...for a number of reasons including losing our three year starting senior QB in the first game.

Appeared Robinson wasn't getting a new contract at LSU, apparently b/c they wanted to go with Kevin Faulk at RB coach. Works for me. Guy has a ton of solid experience.Muschamp going with guys who have long and proven track records for DL and RB coach.

Which is a refreshing from some of his previous hires. I guess we'll see how well it works out when we're 6-0 heading into the BYE week.
