September to-do list for Will Muschamp

September 01, 2017

The South Carolina recruiting push kicks into high gear on Sept. 1 and there’s plenty on the line for coach Will Muschamp.

Reel him in

It’s winning time for South Carolina.

Four-star linebacker Channing Tindall is planning to make a commitment before the end of the month and the hometown Gamecocks have been the leader for much of his recruitment. Muschamp & Co. will have to survive last-minute pushes by Florida, Florida State and Georgia, but it’s also important to get off to a respectable start on the field.

Proximity certainly is in South Carolina’s favor — Spring Valley High School is about a half-hour drive from Williams-Brice Stadium, so that’s going to help, even if things don’t play out so well over the next few Saturdays.

Coach Muschamp and linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler have also built strong connections and it is time for them to seal the deal with the No. 2 overall prospect in the state of South Carolina, according to the 247Sports composite.

Build the guest list

Week 3. Williams-Brice Stadium. Night game. Blackout.

The home opener has all the ingredients of being a big-time recruiting event for South Carolina, especially if it beats North Carolina State on Saturday and wins at Missouri.

Tindall, who also wants to visit Florida and Georgia before deciding, is a potential guest. Same goes for 2018 offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn (Charlotte, N.C.), unless he decides to make a commitment to N.C. State or Duke.

With much of the 2018 class already accounted for, the focus could be on prospects from the 2019 class and beyond. Jammie Robinson and DeAngelo Griffin, Crisp County (Ga.) High School teammates of 2019 commitment Ahdarrious Gee, are among the prospects who might end up on the guest list.

Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School quarterback Luke Doty, who was offered by South Carolina earlier this week, is expected to return to Columbia. Irmo (S.C.) High School 2019 running back Kendrell Flowers will also be at the game.

The guest list should really start to take shape over the next week or so.

Pound the pavement

South Carolina’s coaches will be allowed to get back out on the recruiting trail on Friday night to check out prospects from the 2018 class and beyond.

After a month-long dead period in August, the current quiet period runs from Sept. 1 through Nov. 25. NCAA rules permit 42 evaluation days during the period.

It will be interesting to see how they time those on-campus visits, because they can go to a school only once during the quiet period.
