Shane Beamer previews the start of USC fall practice
VIDEOS FROM USC MEDIA

Gamecock football will begin fall camp on Friday as the Gamecocks look to build on Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over North Carolina to cap the 2021 campaign. There is a lot of buzz surrounding the program, especially at quarterback, where Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler is set to take over the offense.

On Thursday, head coach Shane Beamer met with the media to preview the start of practice. The 2nd-year head coach confirmed that punter Kai Kroeger is out for the start of preseason camp, though he is optimistic that Kroeger will be back for game one. Beamer also bragged about the experience of the offensive line, what retiring DT Rick Sandidge’s role will be with the program, and how pumped he is that Gamecock fans are excited about the 2022 season.

Shane Beamer addressed reporters at the Gamecocks' media day Thursday as South Carolina prepares to open fall camp Friday.

A couple of takeaways:

  • Shane truly did not intend to play Noland last year at all until at some point he felt he needed to.
  • He's passionate and pays attention to the details enough to make us a better program.
  • He knows we need to play better and is very confident about the talent he's bringing into the program.
  • We have improved, but realistically so have the top-tier SEC teams as well. I think we will have showed more improvement over the mid-tier and below teams, though.

This fall camp is one of the most important ones we have had in a while.

Other head coaches paid attention to the success Dabo had benching Kelly Bryant for Trevor Lawrence.

Lincoln Riley tried to mimic that success by benching Rattler in the middle of a winning streak he created and it just didn't work out.

Rattler has matured a little since he's been here. He just needs good teammates and that is where the question marks are at right now.

All the talk about the about the momentum created by the Duke's Mayo Bowl win, but silence about the game's MVP at QB.

Realistically Rattler, Doty, and Cinco will get PT at QB this year in one form or another because this program has been the most successful with mobile QBs with a good arm.

The success we have had in the past with Tommy Suggs, Jeff Grantz, and Connor Shaw bear that out, but a mobile QB is going to get banged up, too.

I am looking forward to seeing which players will step up this season and I think Shane can manage the egos as needed, too.

Like the comments about having improved depth, and being further along at this stage of the preseason, than where we were in the same stage last season's preseason. Progress moving forward.....
