South Carolina’s wide receiver class one of nation’s best per Rivals.com
Feb. 16, 2017
South Carolina is adding more young talent to its wide receiver corps in 2017.
The Gamecocks signed three receivers in its 2017 recruiting class, a group that Rivals.com ranked as the No. 9 best wide receiver class in the nation.
Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando’s OrTre Smith highlighted the class, as the state’s top recruit and an early enrollee. Union (S.C.) slot receiver Shi Smith and Dallas (Ga.) North Paulding’s Chad Terrell joined Smith to make for a talented trio coming to South Carolina.
“The Gamecocks plan to throw the ball more in 2017 and with the weapons the school added in this year’s class, it should come as no surprise,” wrote Rivals.com’s Woody Wommack. “OrTre Smith was the top player regardless of position in the state of South Carolina and has the chance to make an immediate impact. Meanwhile, Shi Smith is a versatile x-factor type receiver who can be used in a variety of ways, whether it be inside or outside or perhaps even taking handoffs when needed. Terrell is a former basketball star with an impressive leaping ability and will surely be both a third down and red zone target.”
All three players the Gamecocks signed are regarded as four-star recruits by Rivals.com.
South Carolina signed four wide receivers in the 2016 class, playing all four as true freshmen, led by Bryan Edwards. The Conway (S.C.) product was an All-SEC freshman team selection by Athlon Sports after he caught 44 passes for 590 yards and four touchdowns in 2016.
