South Carolina first to offer rising WR from Georgia

July 07, 2016

South Carolina was first to extend an offer to Sam Jones, a 2018 wide receiver from Richmond Hill, Ga. He’s since added Central Michigan and Southern Miss.

“It was just stunning … I didn’t know what to do with myself when they offered. It was just amazing,” he said of South Carolina.

The Gamecocks hosted James and a few of his teammates in June for the Will Muschamp Football Camp.

“It was pretty good. It was fun. I had a great time,” he said.

James checked in at 6-foot, 158 pounds. In the 40, he was clocked at 4.59. His best broad jump was 9 feet, 5 inches.

“It was just how it was run,” he said, when asked about the May camp, “How they set it up and everything, because the camps I usually go to, we don’t really do all the testing … it was a good time being there.”

James also enjoyed working with wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.

“It was great. He’s a great coach. It was just a great experience with him,” James said.

Clemson and Southern Miss also hosted him for camps last month. He’ll head to Alabama later this month.

As a sophomore, James had 24 catches for 516 yards. He totaled 1,026 all-purpose yards, to go along with 50 tackles and three interceptions.
