South Carolina football: Quarterback Jake Bentley’s MRI confirms no structural damage

Dec. 03, 2016

South Carolina’s 56-7 loss to Clemson last week was difficult for Gamecocks fans not just because of the final score. Their emerging freshman quarterback Jake Bentley went down with a knee injury, and did not return after halftime. Fortunately, according to TheState.com, an MRI performed on Bentley’s knee confirmed that the worst had been avoid: there is no structural damage.

This is fantastic news for Will Muschamp’s squad, as the Gamecocks have looked like an almost completely different team since Bentley took over the position full-time. It’s especially good to hear because, despite his youth, Bentley is no stranger to knee trouble: he had reconstructive surgery on both ACLs while in high school.

Since taking over as the starter on Oct. 22 against UMass, Bentley has thrown for 1,030 yards and 6 TDs while completing 63.3% of his passes. In six games at the leading man, Bentley and the Gamecocks have gone 4-2, bringing their season-long record to 6-6, thus making South Carolina eligible for a surprising bowl berth. The team will learn which bowl its been invited to on Sunday afternoon.
