South Carolina had been somewhat quiet on the recruiting trails this spring until the last weekend in March.
The Gamecocks were sitting at just one verbal commitment until the last two days in March when South Carolina picked up two verbal commitments in back-to-back days to see the commitment list reach three so far for the 2013 recruiting class.
While there are only three commitments, these players are highly ranked and well sought after across the southeast.
South Carolina's first 2013 recruit was offensive lineman D.J. Park from Dillon, S.C.
Park is widely considered one of the top offensive linemen across the country. He finds himself ranked as a 4-star recruit on both Rivals and 247 Sports, and he already had offers from South Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Auburn, LSU and East Carolina before deciding to cast his lot with the Gamecocks.
Park is a versatile player at the next level with the ability to play either guard or tackle. He has all the tools needed to be stable on the South Carolina offensive line for years to come. The only thing that he needs to develop is a mean streak; once he has that, the sky's the limit.
The next commitment for South Carolina was a junior college defensive end by the name of Alfy Hill.
Hill might be a familiar name to Alabama fans, as Hill signed with the Crimson Tide in 2010. Hill was a Top 100 recruit and a 4-star at the time, and he enrolled at Alabama with hopes of becoming part of the top-notch defense for Nick Saban.
However, Hill did not qualify and decided to enroll at East Carolina. He decided ECU wasn't the place for him, either, and Hill eventually wound up at LA Valley Community College, where he currently is today.
South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing stayed on Hill throughout this whole process, and it has paid off. Hill says he has gained 40 pounds since high school, checking in at 6'5" and 273 pounds. The timing is perfect for Hill to come in and play right away, as USC will lose Devin Taylor after the 2012 season and will have a vacant defensive end spot to team up with potential superstar Jadeveon Clowney.
Hill has the size, speed and agility to be effective in the SEC. He is a 4-star recruit on 247 Sports and will have three years remaining to play two.
The third commitment for South Carolina's 2013 class is defensive line/linebacker Gerald Turner. Turner is a local product from Goose Creek, S.C., and will bring some versatility to the Gamecocks defense in 2013.
Turner is a player who can play linebacker, defensive end and even defensive tackle at the next level. The talk around him is that South Carolina would like to use him in a way similar to Eric Norwood and Melvin Ingram during their time in Columbia.
Turner is a 4-star for Rivals, but is a 3-star recruit on 247 Sports. He picked the Gamecocks over North Carolina and Clemson.
South Carolina has landed three very talented individuals and should be in the mix for several more commitments over the coming weeks. The annual Garnet & Black Spring Game held on April 14 will be a big day for recruits, and the Gamecocks could end up with a few more commitments by the end of the month.
