South Carolina, Ole Miss reportedly in final two for former Clemson DB Kaleb Chalmers

Dec. 07, 2016

It’s a two-team race for Kaleb Chalmers.

The former Clemson defensive back is searching for his next playing destination, and is down to South Carolina and Ole Miss, according to The State’s Phil Kornblut.

“He’s home in South Carolina but I don’t know what it’s going to come down to,” Northwest Mississippi State Community College coach Benji Parker told Kornblut. “Kaleb has a great mom and dad and I would think he would want to be as close to them as possible. Now, that’s my opinion, he didn’t say that. But being able to be coached by Coach Muschamp, a pure defensive guy, that’s pretty strong. I know he really likes Coach Robinson and Coach Muschamp, I’ve heard him say that.”

Chalmers took an official visit to South Carolina in November. He will take an official visit to Ole Miss this weekend, according to the report.

The former 3-star recruit signed with Clemson as part of their 2015 class, but redshirted during his first season with the Tigers. He was expected to earn some playing time in 2016, but was dismissed from the program in March after an arrest on drug possession charges.

The defensive back enrolled at Northwest Mississippi State Community College where he’s collected 26 tackles, an interception and 12 pass breakups this season in 11 games.

Chalmers did hold a South Carolina offer out of high school, but chose Clemson over the Gamecocks, North Carolina, Tennessee and Stanford, among others.

Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson has been leading his recruitment. Wherever he ends up, Chalmers will have three years of eligibility remaining.
