South Carolina QB commit Jay Urich wants a big addition to Gamecocks’ 2017 recruiting class

July 09, 2016

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Jay Urich already has two of the top three in-state pass catchers committed to play on his college team of choice, and he wants 4-star athlete OrTre Smith to raise that number to three.

Urich, a 3-star dual-threat quarterback, is pledged to the Gamecocks along with 4-star receiver Shi Smith and 3-star tight end Will Register. Adding Smith, the state of South Carolina’s No. 1 prospect, to the mix is high on the young passer’s list.

During a recent chat with SEC Country at Spartanburg High School, Urich gave his scouting report on all three prospects.

“(OrTre is) just huge. I went to the EPT (Showcase Camp) with him. We’ve thrown together a lot. He’s a big target also, but he has that competitiveness to him, where he just wants to win so bad,” Urich said. “It feeds off of him. Whenever we were doing one-on-ones, it was like we were going to win every rep.”

Shi is “just a playmaker.”

“I don’t know who he reminds me of, he’s his own player,” Urich said. “He’s fast, quick, has good hands. … I’ve heard that he’s a freak. I’ve seen a lot of film on him. I’m excited about him.”

Urich shared his thoughts on Register with SEC Country earlier this week.

“He’s a big target. He’s fast. He’s strong,” Urich said. “We’ve been pretty close ever since we played each other back in the fall, during the playoffs. He’s a good player overall. He’s a good guy, too.

“We’ve been forming a pretty good relationship off the field.

Register, the No. 14 tight end in the Class of 2017, went into detail about Urich, the No. 25 ranked dual-threat quarterback.

“Jay is a great player. He’s got great vision down the field. He throws a really accurate ball. He’s got great timing,” Register said. “We’ve seen he’s a mobile quarterback. We saw him last year, he can run, too. Overall, he’s a great player.”

South Carolina’s 2017 skill position commitments also include 3-star receiver Shawn Smith and 3-star tailback Kyshaun Bryan.

Not counting junior college offensive/defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw, the Gamecocks’ 16-man 2017 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 22 in the country.
