South Carolina ramps up pursuit of the next WR from powerhouse program Byrnes High School

South Carolina has a history of reeling in some of the top talent from Byrnes High School.
In 2010, the Gamecocks reeled in Marcus Lattimore and Nick Jones from the powerhouse program in Duncan, S.C.
Lattimore rushed for more than 2,600 yards and scored 38 touchdowns in three years at South Carolina. Jones, a wide receiver, finished his career with 93 catches for 1,125 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Up next from Byrnes is 3-star WR Chavis Dawkins, who signed with South Carolina in February.
The Gamecocks hope 2018 WR Demarcus Gregory will follow in those footsteps. Coach Will Muschamp offered during the first on-campus 7-on-7 event of the month.
“I felt like that was huge. They told me, third game of the 7-on-7. (Muschamp) said he liked how I get in and out of my cuts and that he wants me to play at South Carolina and he was going to offer me a scholarship,” Gregory said.
Along with South Carolina, he has offers from Ole Miss, East Carolina, Louisville, Maryland, North Carolina State and Wake Forest. Tony Morrell of TheBigSpur has already predicted that Gregory will stay in-state for his college career.
“I like their coaches. I like how everybody is down-to-earth. I like that a lot about (South Carolina),” Gregory said.
The 6-foot-3, 196-pound prospect has already studied up on the style of play offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has implemented in Columbia.
“They’re a one-back system. They like to spread the field and get the ball into their playmakers’ hands,” Gregory said.
Clemson and North Carolina also received visits earlier this month for camp. Virginia Tech and Kentucky will host him in July.
As a sophomore, Gregory caught 20 passes for 463 yards and six touchdowns. Dawkins did most of the heavy lifting, leading Byrnes with 73 catches for 1,319 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Gregory has plenty of time to match those numbers and decide if he wants to follow his former teammate to South Carolina. In the meantime, he’ll be considering a few factors, while looking for a home at the next level.
“I want to go to a good academic school. I want to build a good relationship with my coach and just the facilities that are good,” Gregory said.
