South Carolina recruiting notes: Neil Farrell talks SEC, SpursUp Cookout invites, OrTre Smith and ClemsonJuly 13, 2016
Four SEC schools in the mix Last week, four SEC schools were listed in the lead group for 3-star DT Neil Farrell, who’s ranked as the No. 40 prospect at his position in 2017.

Farrell recently shared his thoughts about the foursome from the SEC.
South Carolina: “I took a visit there (last month), went to their camp and visited the school. I really liked everything about the campus. Just being there was fun. It was interesting. I learned new things.”
LSU: “Me, coach (Ed Orgeron) and coach (Dameyune) Craig have a great relationship. I’ve been there multiple times. The same thing as South Carolina, I really liked it a lot.”
Florida: “I went to their camp in Pensacola. The d-line coach (Chris Rumph) and I had a great bond with each other. He said he wants me to come there.”
Alabama: “I really liked to meet coach (Nick) Saban. We’ve got a good relationship. They’ve got a new d-line coach who I really like. He taught me a lot when I went there for a camp earlier this summer. I could see myself playing for him. He’s a really good coach. I heard he coached in the NFL, too.”
Farrell visited South Carolina in June for the Will Muschamp Football Camp, but he won’t be back to Columbia next weekend for the SpursUp Cookout.
“I’m definitely taking one of my official visits there,” he said.
A top three will be released before the start of his senior season at Murphy High School in Mobile, Ala.
Skinny: South Carolina appears to be in good position to land Farrell. Alabama probably holds the cards here, but the Tide have other names ahead of him on their board. It’s a similar situation with LSU. The Tigers continue to pursue top prospects like Marvin Wilson. Florida is in need of defensive tackles with the 2017 signing class, so he’s probably a take for the Gators.
More SpursUp Cookout chatter There’s another confirmed guest for SpursUp Cookout next Saturday in Columbia: 2017 DE M.J. Webb.
The 4-star prospect from Morgan County High School in Madison, Ga. is one of the prioritiesfor Muschamp in this year. He’s been to South Carolina already this summer and he’s planning to return again this fall on official visit for the Georgia game.
Webb is scheduled to visit Kentucky this weekend.
At this point, it’s not a definite, but 4-star CB Jamyest Williams (Loganville, Ga.) is a potential guest for the cookout in Columbia. SEC Country learned this week that he’s “trying to make it.”
Skinny: The visits to South Carolina continue to add up. It’s starting to become more and more apparent that the Gamecocks could be in line to land Webb, the No. 28 overall prospect from the state of Georgia. Williams, the No. 5 overall player from the state, continues to trend favorably in South Carolina’s direction.
OrTre Smith and Clemson Clemson will host its All In Cookout on July 23, the same day as South Carolina’s event. Assuming Smith plans to spend that Saturday at one of the two schools, it could be quite telling which direction he’s leaning.
Apparently, Clemson is going full-bore for the 4-star athlete from Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, S.C. The Tigers were once thought to have the upper-hand, but the Gamecocks managed to work their way into serious consideration.
The in-state two schools, along with Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, are listed as the finalists. Smith is scheduled to announce his decision on his birthday, Sept. 11.
Skinny: In June, a source close to Smith indicated that Clemson had a lot of ground to make up ground, if they were going to land a commitment. The Tigers improved their standing after his visit, but there’s still work to be done. Meanwhile, South Carolina continues to consistently pursue him as a priority. These days, it’s hard to top Clemson, especially when it comes a coveted wide receiver, so everyone, not just the Gamecocks, has their work cut out.
