South Carolina to trademark phrase ‘Spurs Up’
June 30, 2017
“Spurs Up” has become the unofficial slogan of South Carolina football during the Will Muschamp era, and now the school is looking to trademark the phrase.
According to a report from Gamecockcentral.com, South Carolina first filed for the trademark in March 2016 and expects to officially own the rights to the phrase within the year.
“Once Coach Muschamp started using it in earnest, we wanted to start to protect it,” senior associate athletics director for marketing and branding Eric Nichols told Gamecock Central.
The phrase has a massive presence on social media — fans and coaches use it to celebrate everything from new commitments to new on-campus restaurants.
Nichols also told Gamecock central he expects the process to be completed before the start of the 2017 football season.
