Spring Game was fun. Started with Sellers against Doty. Sellers looked good but every time he tried to run they would stop as soon as a defender touched him. They were not allowed to try and tackle him. He only played 2 possessions.
Doty looked awesome and played the longest of any of the QB, about 4 or 5 possessions.
They brought in Air Noland but he did not do anything great. Then they brought in Cutter Woods. That kid really is special. His first play he threw a 52 yard pass that was right on the money. Then had a 17 yard pass in tight coverage followed by a 1 yard run for the first TD of the game.
They tried Reno some but he had the first int.
The D looked fantastic. They were getting to all the QBs with their blitz and did real well against the runs.
Jawarn Howell and Rahsul Faison both looked good running but the D did not give them much room.
They even ran a couple trick plays but only one worked for a first down.
I think we may have a pretty decent team.

I was surprised to see Doty playing QB again, but he is a 6th year player and looked real comfortable. Maybe let the others get more practice and training.

Sounds like Doty should get the call over Woods unless garbage time… whether he will or not is a different story. Noland lost a notch for sure.

Offense has a ways to go IMO. Not sure we looked any different from the bowl game. Woods/Doty should* be vying for #2 spot but don't be surprised if Noland stays if he doesn't get few packages the way Robby Ashford did. This could be wholly attributed to his size and zero need to throw. Personally I don't think he's ready to see the field yet. Our WR's showed little improvement if any and RBs were stifled by D-Line but good enough to pick up positive yardage for the majority.

I'm struggling to see how this defense could possibly be AS good as last year with the amount of experience we lost. While they looked solid across the board our offense did very little to challenge them. It will take them playing at their best to win every game for us, if they struggle even a little it could be disastrous.

Special teams looked just ok but the bar has been set very high there and you don't have the same energy during spring. The field goal competition with the whole crowd/team cheering was really a lot of fun.

After seeing Sellers scramble for his life again, I'm settling in for another above average year where we're a fringe top 25 team. Nothing flashy or fancy, just gritty football team that wins win they should.

shane did let out that stanley would be the starting center right now but i get the feeling he wont release a post spring depth chart. i was already on board with moving doty back to qb with our lack of experience behind sellers. i like having a backup where the run game doesnt need to change much when hes in there.

Like I said, Doty looked good as a QB. He did not throw a 51 yard bomb like Cutter, but did not really try either. But his short passes we on the money as he went 10-12 for 85 yards.
It is really hard to say much from a spring game because half you good players are on one side and half on the other. Each QB was working with veteran and rookie receivers. The D looked good but they never faced an entire starting Offense. Just pieces.
But at least the coaches got a chance to see what they needed to work on the most this fall.
All things considered, we will not have a clue what we got until after 8/31. Va. Tech is not going to be a walk in the park.

The vibes were pretty good between LaNorris and Luke after Doty made the move to WR a while back. Both are mature leaders who can run if needed.

We likely saw QB1 and 2 in the Spring Game.
