Another big recruiting weekMuschamp’s one-day camp series resumes Monday at 10 a.m. and runs through Friday. The Gamecocks staff will host several notable recruits over the next six days, which ends Saturday with another cookout.
On Tuesday, 2-star outside linebacker T.J. Minnifee (Lebanon, Tenn.) will be joined byfellow 2017 prospect Ben Hutch, a 3-star defensive tackle from Hillsboro High School (Nashville, Tenn.).
Berkeley High School (S.C.) 2018 safety Israel Mukuamu will also visit South Carolina for Tuesday’s camp. Several of his training partners from the Elite Pro Training defensive back group are scheduled to camp with the Gamecocks later in the week.
Saturday’s cookout already has several confirmed visitors:
Johnson was offered by the Gamecocks earlier this summer. He’s ranked as the No. 31 weak-side defensive end in the class of 2017. A rising senior at St. John’s College High School, Johnson is the No. 4 overall prospect from Washington, D.C.
Skinny: Until Johnson takes a visit to South Carolina, it’s hard to view the Gamecocks as a serious contender. Maryland is in the driver’s seat.
More on Brad JohnsonLast week, SEC Country caught up with Pendleton High School (S.C.) head coach Paul Sutherland, who shared a few details about Johnson’s athleticism.
We left out one part.
“Malik Gray, who signed with Wake Forest, a six-time state champion sprinter and he’s 10.6 in the 100-meter. Malik ran a 47-second 400,” Sutherland said. “When we would time them, we’d always run (Gray and Johnson) head-to-head in the 40. You couldn’t put a sheet of paper between them in 40 yards.”
In Sutherland’s eyes, it’s the fast-twitch that makes Johnson so special.
“He’s a defensive playmaker,” Sutherland said. “Very powerful. Again, his ability to pursue, run down the ball just like all the great ones, but his explosiveness and ability to run is just so imminent.”
Power plays a big part, too.
“Once he gets those hands inside, he’s long-armed and his last bench was 290 (pounds), four times (with) long arms just repping it out,” Sutherland said.
Skinny: Johnson is scheduled to take his first visit to Virginia Tech later this month. Since June’s overnight stay in Columbia, he’s yet to reschedule a return trip.
Big news on the way?Matthew Butler, one of South Carolina’s top 2017 defensive line targets, sent out an interesting tweet on Sunday night.
Was he suggesting that a commitment might be on the way? Perhaps.
Butler visited South Carolina and Tennessee in the middle of June. Maybe he’s looking to return to the two schools this week.
It’s also possible that the 3-star defensive end from Garner High School (N.C.) is ready to make a commitment. If that’s the case, that probably doesn’t bode well for either of the two SEC schools.
Skinny: If Butler does commit, it will probably be to one of the in-state schools. He’s visited NC State, Duke and North Carolina the most. His most recent visit was to see the Wolfpack, a week after his trips to South Carolina and Tennessee. Also, keep in mind, Butler could be setting a date to announce his commitment during a ceremony at his school. Stay tuned.
