SpursUp Surveillance: Gamecocks have to fend off SEC rival to keep commitmentJuly 27, 2016
Keeping the Bulldogs at baySouth Carolina will need to play a little keep away to hold onto Devonte Wyatt’s commitment. The 3-star defensive lineman from Towers High School (Decatur, Ga.) recently told DawgNation that the Gamecocks and UGA are tied.
A few days after visiting Georgia, Wyatt was back in Columbia with his parents to attend South Carolina’s cookout.
“I had fun through the whole thing,” he said. “It was hot outside, but we weren’t really outside like that though. We were just in the indoor, then we went to another spot for the dodge ball, but it was fun.”
What was the message from the Gamecocks coaching staff?
“They were telling me to stay committed and don’t let somebody else change my mind,” Wyatt said.
Georgia, however, is very much in the picture.
“It was the same at both. All of the coaches were good. I like all the coaches, the coaches from Georgia and South Carolina,” he said.
Skinny: Hold on tight, folks. This is going to be a tough fight for South Carolina. Anytime Georgia sets its sights on an in-state target, you’re in for a battle.
More on Trajan BandyFour-star CB Trajan Bandy spoke with SEC Country on Monday night about his return trip to South Carolina for Saturday’s cookout.
“It was extremely good. I was kind of surprised. I didn’t think it was going to be like that,” Bandy said. “Coach (Travaris Robinson) and coach Muschamp, both of those guys showed me a great time.”
The Gamecocks coaches made quite an impression on the No. 29-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2017.
“Those guys knew I just came out of a commitment. I just recently de-committed from Oklahoma and they weren’t pressuring me. I really liked that about them,” Bandy said. “They really just wanted to show me a good time and welcome me to South Carolina and just try to get a feeling of that place.”
During the visit, Bandy got a preview of what the new football facilities would look like at South Carolina.
“I was extremely impressed by that and I can’t wait to get back to see it again,” he said.
Bandy, who is from Columbus High School in Miami, has seen the hometown school several times over the years. He’s even got a few teammates committed to the Hurricanes. However, Bandy expressed a desire to continue building relationships with the coaches, and also reiterated his interest in the Gamecocks.
“I really want to have that feeling, to see how it feels to be home,” Bandy said, “And to try to figure out coach Mark Richt and Mike Rumph, try to figure those guys out, and I really like South Carolina.”
Skinny: That final quote wasn’t the only time Bandy pivoted and brought up South Carolina without prompt. As noted on Tuesday, the Gamecocks are in strong position for his commitment.
Elsewhere on the trailOne of the defensive tackle targets left on South Carolina’s 2017 board made a surprise commitment on Tuesday night. Neil Farrell, a 3-star from Mobile, Ala., announced his commitment to LSU on Twitter.
