SpursUp Surveillance: Gamecocks hope DB momentum continues with top target Jamyest WilliamsJuly 25, 2016

Big news from the cookoutAs expected, South Carolina landed another piece to its collection of 2017 commitments when 3-star safety Zay Brown went public with his decision Saturday. Linebacker Sherrod Greene’s decision to follow suit Sunday night capped a weekend that could be prove to be critical to Muschamp’s success as South Carolina’s head coach.

The success of the weekend won’t be fully quantified until letters of intent are signed over the next couple of Februarys. Four-star cornerback Jamyest Williams (Loganville, Ga.) is among the top priorities left for South Carolina in 2017. Clemson continues to be a factor, too. The No. 7 cornerback in the country visited both schools over the weekend. Clemson was up first Friday.

South Carolina hosted him for two days over the weekend. TheClemsonInsider spoke Sunday night with Williams, after his weekend in the state of South Carolina.

“It went good. I had a great time there also. I just hung out with some of the top guys they want. It was a good bonding experience,” Williams said of his trip to Columbia.

South Carolina and Clemson are listed among the favorites, along with Georgia, Tennessee and Ohio State.

“I feel the same about both. They are both equal,” Williams said, when asked to compare the Gamecocks and Tigers.

“I am going to make a decision soon. I am not ready yet, but it will be sooner. It will be some time during my season,” Williams said.

SkinnySouth Carolina continues to be in strong position for Williams, who’s expected to be back on campus later this fall for the Texas A&M game. Those plans were made with a couple of the Gamecocks defensive back commitments.

Muschamp likes Butler’s versatilityMatthew Butler made his way back to South Carolina, just weeks after his first visit to the campus. The 3-star defensive end from Garner, N.C. spent time with Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.

“(Muschamp) just emphasized the main things, the versatility of me as a player there and their want and need for people like me, things like that,” Butler said. “He’s always been welcoming and we have steady communication by phone and text message”

Muschamp and Robinson think Butler can play anywhere along the defensive line.

“I’ve always felt like I could play (on) both sides of the line of scrimmage … and they talked about, when I get there, I would kind of be one of my own kind, because they don’t have guys with my size who can get vertical up the field,” Butler said. “That’s what they emphasize.

“I have the potential — at my size — on first-down, an end. On second-down a 3-technique and on third-down, a nose guard to just beat the center to close the pocket and things like that. I’d be utilized in different ways, if I go to South Carolina, across the line of scrimmage.”

SkinnySouth Carolina is going to be a factor until the end for Butler, but Alabama holds the cards here. If the Tide offer, the Gamecocks and everyone else are probably going to miss out. He’ll wait until October to see what Nick Saban decides to do.

In and outAfter publishing multiple reports on which prospects were planning to attend Saturday’s cookout, here’s a quick rundown of who else made it, and those who didn’t.

Offensive lineman T.J. Moore, 4-star teammate of commit Eric Douglas, was on campus. And he could be heading back to Tennessee this week. The Vols and Gamecocks continue to be among the front-runners for the highest-rated of three lineman at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C. who will sign with Power 5 schools, including Douglas and N.C. State commit Grant Gibson.

Four-star CB Trajan Bandy, a former Oklahoma commitment, returned to South Carolina for the first time since Muschamp took over as head coach. The No. 29 cornerback from Columbus High School in Miami is considering a number of schools, including Miami and Tennessee.

Moore wasn’t the only top prospect from the state of North Carolina. Safety Hamsah Nasirildeen, a 4-star prospect from Concord (N.C.) High School, and his teammate Rick Sandidge, a 4-star defensive tackle in the Class of 2018, visited.

Priority defensive lineman M.J. Webb was unable to attend the cookout, because of a death in the family, according to Phil Kornblut. The 4-star from Madison, Ga. remains a priority for the Gamecocks 2017 class.

Dax Hollifield, another of the top 2018 prospects from North Carolina, did not visit South Carolina. The linebacker from Shelby, N.C. was unable to attend, because his brother had an AAU basketball game.

Elsewhere on the trailSeveral South Carolina targets made commitments or switched affiliations over the weekend. James Houston (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was the most significant with his Friday commitment to Florida.

Adarius Lemons joined Houston when he flipped to Florida from North Carolina on Sunday. South Carolina hosted the 4-star running back from Clearwater, Fla. last week, when he was on campus for Muschamp Camp.

Arkansas landed 2017 running back Chase Hayden a few hours later. A 3-star prospect from Collierville, Tenn. and son of former Vols and NFL running back Aaron Hayden, he once considered the Gamecocks as his favorites.
