After South Carolina’s 13-10 win over Vanderbilt, running backs coach Bobby Bentley made at least one appearance in the Nashville, Tenn. area, one of his recruiting spots.
On Friday, Bentley passed out two offers at Siegel High School in Murfreesboro: 2018 OT Maxwell Iyama and 2019 DE Joe Anderson.
Anderson, a 4-star who’s listed by 247Sports as the No. 69 overall prospect in the class of 2019, was surprised by the news.
“I didn’t think I was going to get it so early. I saw them play against Vanderbilt on Thursday and I liked the way they played,” Anderson said.
The 6-foot-4, 245-pound prospect offered more details about what he saw from the Gamecocks.
“I really liked their defensive line,” he said. “I liked the way they played. I liked the way they tackled, they were so physical when they tackled. And I liked their running back, he was pretty fast.”
South Carolina’s offer joined a handful of SEC suitors, which includes Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
“I don’t really know much, but since (South Carolina) offered me, I’ll be playing close attention, because they’ll probably be on my radar these next few years … I’ll be paying attention to the coaches and how they do things,” Anderson said. “I’ll be visiting there soon, possibly for a game.”
Iyama weighs in
“(Bentley) told me that I’m going to need to go to one of their camps, so I can spend time with the coach, to see who I am and to see how I am personally,” Iyama said. “We were just having a good conversation.
“He was like, ‘You know you’re going to the NFL, right?’”
That certainly got his Iyama’s attention.
“I thought I was dreaming, but it’s great, it’s exciting,” he said of the Gamecocks offer. “It’s exciting. It boosts my talent to know that I’ve got SEC talent and it just makes me want to go harder every day. It’s really big.”
Iyama hopes to visit South Carolina later this fall for a game.
“I know it’s a great program. It’s really nice. I need to go visit to know more, to see it first-hand,” he said. “But I’ve heard they have a really good program.”
Clemson, Georgia, Louisville Memphis and Purdue are also in contact with Iyama, who knows what to look as he weighs his options.
“I want to know how it is, as far as the education, because I always have to have a plan B to fall back on. And how they work, how the environment is. I just want to fit in. That’s the top priority, just to fit in, so I can gel easily with the team and the program. I just want to know I can get better and if I’ll be happy over there.”

With college football back in full-swing, prospects will start hitting the road with more regularity. Here are some unofficial visit plans for several South Carolina targets:
As Bentley was offering Iyama and Anderson, Muschamp stopped by Woodmont High School in Piedmont, S.C. to check in on 3-star LB commitment Davonne Bowen.
Bowen, who committed to the Gamecocks in June, later spoke with his future head coach.
“He was saying that he likes what I’ve been doing so far and he wants me to keep it up and that they’re excited about me and ready to get things started,” Bowen said.

- 2018 DE Xavier Thomas (Florence, S.C.) is scheduled to visit South Carolina in two weeks for its home opener against East Carolina.
- 2018 TE Zach Sheffer (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) is going to Tennessee and “hopefully Michigan, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss and possibly LSU.”
- 2018 WR Sam Pinckney (Greenwood, S.C.) is scheduled to head to Chapel Hill for North Carolina’s game against Virginia Tech on Oct. 8.
- 2019 WR Jacoby Pinckeny (Roebuck, S.C.) plans to visit South Carolina for the Georgia game on Oct 8. His date to see Virginia Tech is to be determined, as are his potential stops at North Carolina and Duke.
- 2018 DB Nate Thompson (Sanford, N.C.) said he plans to visit Virginia Tech, N.C. State, Duke, ECU, Notre Dame and Wake Forest this fall.
- 2018 LB Dax Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.) has plans to visit Virginia Tech on Thursday, Oct. 20 for the Miami game. Two days later, he’ll see Penn State host Ohio State.
