SpursUp Surveillance: How Will Muschamp landed M.J. Webb and Jamyest Williams looming decision
August 24, 2016
Jonathan Bullard impact on M.J. Webb
Earlier this summer, Muschamp made it apparent that he thought 4-star DE M.J. Webb was comparable to Chicago Bears rookie Jonathan Bullard, one of Muschamp’s best recruits and players at Florida.
Muschamp didn’t just tell Webb about the similarities. He showed him.
Bill Malone, Webb’s coach at Morgan County High School in Madison, Ga., was impressed with the pitch.
“We’ve been to a number of different colleges and every one of them does things uniquely and every one of them does things in a good way, but coach Muschamp sat down with us and M.J. and he would show that clip … right after that (Bullard) clip, he would show M.J. from when he was in high school for us last year doing that same type of technique,” Malone said.
That could have been the turning point for Webb, who committed to South Carolinalast week over offers from Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky.
“I thought that was exceptionally professional the way that South Carolina put together that video,” Malone said. “It really hit home with M.J. ‘Here I am in high school, I’ve played multiple positions, then you have a coach telling me, when you get to us, we’re going to do the same thing with you.’”
Relationships also played a big part in Webb’s decision to pledge to the Gamecocks.
“Coach Lance Thompson has recruited M.J. – I think Lance was at Alabama when we first met him, then at Auburn and now at South Carolina,” Malone said. “Have a great relationship with him.”
Decision day looms for Williams
Shame on us. It’s Wednesday morning on Jamyest Williams announcement week we’re just now writing about it. At this point, there isn’t a whole lot new to share. Each move by the 4-star cornerback has been pretty well-documented by SEC Country over the last couple of months.
His most recent college visit, a preseason camp stop at Georgia, didn’t change much. At least that’s the word on the street.
On Tuesday, Williams tweeted details about his Saturday afternoon’s announcement at Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga.
If Williams announces a commitment to South Carolina, which most folks still believe will happen, he would be the fifth 4-star prospect in the Gamecocks 2017 haul. At No. 55 overall, he would also be the top-ranked prospect in the class.
