SpursUp Surveillance: Identifying the next possible QB commitment for South Carolina
August 31, 2016
South Carolina has four scholarship quarterbacks on this season’s roster. Senior Perry Orth will be replaced on the roster by 3-star commitment Jay Urich.
This year’s scholarship count also includes Michael Scarnecchia, a redshirt sophomore, and two freshmen, Jake Bentley and Brandon McIlwain.
With Scarnecchia on schedule to depart after 2017, might the Gamecocks look to go after two quarterbacks in 2018?
Perhaps. One might also reasonably predict that either Bentley or McIlwain will be somewhere else by 2018.
In the latest edition of SEC Country’s SpursUp Surveillance, we take a look at several of the quarterback prospects on South Carolina’s radar for the 2018 signing class.
James Foster – Lanier High School (Montgomery, Ala.)
Foster committed to North Carolina last November, but he opted to look at other options this summer.
South Carolina offered in April, then had him in for an extended visit in June for the Elite QB camp. He also made stops at Tennessee and Alabama.
Behind the Tar Heels — Foster told SEC Country — are the Gamecocks and Vols.
A 6-foot-3, 210-pound 3-star prospect, Foster is the No. 16 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018.

Brayden Hawkins – Dillon High School (S.C.)
Hawkins might be among the most well-traveled quarterbacks in the country. Before his last-minute transfer from York High School, he was a busy man this summer, camping at South Carolina, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, LSU, Clemson, East Carolina, N.C. State and Duke.
His quarterback coach is nationally renowned instructor Steve Clarkson, who’s based out of California. The work seems to be paying off on Friday nights. Hawkins’ release looks quicker than it was a season ago, and his arm seems to be stronger, too.
However, Hawkins hasn’t received any offers yet, though that probably won’t be the case for too much longer.
Listed at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, he possesses the size, but the jury’s still out on his athleticism and ability to be a dual threat.

Dakereon Joyner – Fort Dorchester High School (North Charleston, S.C.)
There’s almost a Johnny Manziel feel to Joyner’s game.
Like Manziel, Joyner has an exciting, improvisational sense about him. At times, it can be as nerve-racking as it is exciting. And, like Manziel, Joyner’s a dual threat who’s capable of beating you with his legs and arm, which he needs to demonstrate to continue to get better.
They’re also comparable on the hoof. Manziel was measured at 6-foot, 207 pounds at the NFL Combine. Joyner is listed at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds on his 247Sports profile.
Hopefully, for Joyner’s sake, the similarities end there.
South Carolina continues to be among the teams to beat, if not the team to beat. The current Gamecocks coaching staff has hosted him for several visits and continue to make him a priority for 2018.
Clemson, N.C. State, North Carolina, Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma and Tennessee have offered.
In his 2016 season opener against Sandy Creek High School (Ga.), Joyner connected on 14 of 23 throws for 439 yards and 5 touchdowns, with 70 yards rushing and a score.
https://www.hudl.com/video/3/3128860/57ba31103bd8146c140521f2
Joyner completed 13 of 17 passes for 364 yards and 5 touchdowns last week against Colleton County High School (S.C.). He also had a 63-yard touchdown run.

According to the 247Sports composite, Joyner is a 4-star prospect and the No. 13-ranked athlete in the Class of 2018.
Joe Milton – Olympia High School (Orlando, Fla.)
In terms of raw strength, there’s isn’t a quarterback on this list with a bigger arm than Milton. There may not be many more in the entire country.
That’s on display in the video below.
https://www.hudl.com/video/3/5316223/57c464e2f617096c34555922
Milton wowed coaches during his camp stop at South Carolina earlier this summer. However, it’s also pretty apparent that he needs to clean up a few things. Mechanically, he’s pretty raw, which leads to some issues with accuracy, but the potential is certainly there.
He’s listed at 6-foot-5, 212 pounds, so he more than meets the eye test. Plus, he’s a good athlete — some schools are recruiting him to play wide receiver.
Akron, FAU, Iowa State, McNeese State and Mercer have offered.
Artur Sitkowski – Old Bridge High School (N.J.)
Sitkowski was a busy man this summer, making trips to several schools up and down the East Coast, including South Carolina.
Ranked as the No. 54 overall prospect in the country, Sitkowski is also listed as the No. 4 pro-style passer and the third-best prospect from the state of New Jersey.
Florida, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State are among the top suitors for the 6-foot-4, 215-pound 4-star talent.
