So now what?
With Jamyest Williams now on board, South Carolina’s 2017 signing class has commitments from 22 — that’s counting JUCO placement Javon Kinlaw, a defensive tackle from Goose Creek, S.C., who’s about to begin his freshman season at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi.
The attention now turns to 4-star WR OrTre Smith, who announces his decision on Sept. 11. SEC Country is scheduled to meet with Smith at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, S.C., on Wednesday.
If Smith commits to South Carolina, that could potentially close the book on the offensive side of the ball. If Smith commits elsewhere, 3-star prospect Chad Terrell (Dallas, Ga.) is the next man up on the wide receiver wish list.
Space is also limited for the defensive side, with only a handful of prospects to watch as we move into the start of the regular season. This isn’t a hard-and-fast list, but one we think represents the top prospects that Muschamp & Co. are seriously pursuing:
S Johnathan Abram (Jones County Junior College), DE Matthew Butler (Garner, N.C.), DE/OLB, DB Naytron Culpepper (Miami), Brad Johnson (Pendleton, S.C.), DT Romello Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and DT Tyrone Truesdell (Augusta, Ga.).

Speaking of Abram, Muschamp retweeted Jones County’s kickoff countdown on Saturday, which featured him in his No. 5 jersey.
Jones County kicks off on Thursday against East Mississippi Community College, the school featured on the Netflix series “Last Chance U.” For its second game, Jones County will travel to Mississippi Delta. That same week, South Carolina heads to Mississippi State.
We’ve been told that the Gamecocks coaching staff is expected to have a contingent at Jones County’s game at Mississippi Delta. SEC Country’s two-man South Carolina team will be on hand to see Abram, Kinlaw and WR Diondre Champaigne.
Heading into this week, South Carolina has the No. 10-ranked recruiting class, according to Rivals. The Gamecocks are sandwiched between Clemson and Michigan.
The 247Sports Composite lists South Carolina at 15, between Auburn and Southern Cal. Scout has the Gamecocks at No. 19 overall, between Mississippi State and North Carolina.
None of the three include Kinlaw in South Carolina’s class.
It’s always interesting to see which prospects reach out to newly minted commitments. Williams certainly received plenty of love over Twitter. One of the tweets at Williams came from 2018 DE Xavier Thomas, who some consider to be the country’s best for that class.
Williams responded to Thomas’ tweet with some encouraging words that fired up Gamecocks fans.
T-Rob on the move
South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson began the week as the No. 14 ranked recruiter in the country, according to 247. Robinson raced up the charts from the 68th spot after Williams committed to South Carolina on Saturday.
For a coordinator, that’s pretty darn solid. Not counting coaches with special teams coordinator in their title, only Clemson’s Jeff Scott (3) and Alabama’s Lane Kiffin (4) are ranked higher than Robinson.
Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is the next-highest-rated coordinator at 17.
