What Nasirildeen brings to the table
Brace yourself. You’re about to read a whole bunch of really good things about South Carolina’s latest commitment, 4-star Hamsah Nasirildeen.
Not only does the Concord High School (N.C.) rising senior look the part as a 6-foot-3, 210-pound safety, but he also runs really well. Dude hits like a truck, has nice ball skills and good length. Also, based off a few minutes of highlights, it looks like he’s got instincts, too.
At safety for Will Muschamp, whether that’s as the free, in the box or coming on a blitz, Nasirildeen has plenty of tools to be an effective defender for the Gamecocks. Remember, Muschamp personally worked out Nasirildeen when he was on campus in early June for camp.
But that’s just one position, on one side of the ball in one sport.
Nasirildeen is a nice wide receiver – he had 33 catches for 585 yards and 7 touchdowns as a junior. If he wanted to pigeonhole himself as a wide receiver, Nasirildeen would probably be a 4-star at that position, too.
Obviously, the previously mentioned size, speed and ball skills he shows at safety – all those things translate to wide receiver. Fast-forward to 7:11 to see for yourself. That’s where the offensive highlights begin.
This guy isn’t a bad basketball player either. He’ll change the school’s intramural league if those kind of activities are permitted by the head coach. His junior highlights feature plenty of impressive run-out dunks and plays in transition that will make him a factor on the hardwood in Columbia.
Food for thought
While getting back up to speed on the type of prospect Nasirildeen could be for the Gamecocks, one thought kept coming to mind.
Is this the guy Clemson thought they could turn Bryan Edwards into?
Remember, the Tigers staff wanted Edwards to come play safety for them, even though most of his experience was at wide receiver. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, his size is identical to Nasirildeen’s listed height and weight, according to 247.
But Edwards wanted to play wide receiver. About eight months after deciding to take that route, it’s probably safe to say that the decision has worked out just fine for both parties.
From the Clemson side of the coin, you don’t want guys playing defense who would rather player offense. That type of mentality usually doesn’t work out all that well. There’s nothing wrong with preferring the offensive side, especially when you’re on track to be an impact wide receiver in the SEC. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.
Nasirildeen is a safety through and through, at least for Muschamp. He’s got the disposition to play defense. Again, he hits like a truck. Ball carriers get tackled to the ground. Combine that with his size and its not far-fetched to see why some folks — like 247 — believe Nasirildeen is an outside linebacker at the next level.
Guys like Nasirildeen usually stay on that side of the ball, even if they’re good enough to be an elite playmaker on offense.
Due back on campus
South Carolina will host 4-star DE M.J. Webb for another visit on Friday, according to Phil Kornblut. The Morgan County High School prospect will watch the Gamecocks practice that morning.
Webb told Kornblut that he’s not going to make a decision until November.
“I just want to see the guys get after it because I haven’t been over to see them practice,” Webb said. “I want to see how the team works around him (Will Muschamp) being a new head coach and how they go and get after it.”
Webb already has taken several visits to South Carolina this calendar year, and he’s scheduled to take an official visit the weekend of the Georgia game.
Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky also are in the mix.
