SpursUp Surveillance: Will Muschamp talks Mississippi JUCO league
Sept. 08, 2016
Jones County Junior College features a pair of South Carolina commitments: DE Javon Kinlaw and WR Diondre Champaigne. Plus, S Johnathan Abram, a former Georgia safety, also is on Muschamp’s radar.
After knocking off top-ranked East Mississippi Community College, No. 15 Jones County heads to Mississippi Delta on Thursday night. SEC Country will be on location.
Muschamp is familiar with the lay of the land in the Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges.
“There’s a lot of really good programs over the years that we’ve had tremendous success, that I personally can say I’ve had tremendous success with players coming out of the Mississippi junior college league,” Muschamp said.
A majority of the players on South Carolina’s roster who made junior college stops went the Kansas route. Dante Sawyer matriculated through EMCC.
Mississippi State, South Carolina’s opponent on Saturday, has seven former Mississippi JUCO players on its roster.
“Outstanding players and really good programs that do a good job helping a young man who maybe academically didn’t … a lot of times, young people don’t always understand in ninth or 10th grade academically some of the things they need to do or are required to do,” Muschamp said. “Maybe they don’t have an idea they have an opportunity to go to college.
“Their families never been afforded that opportunity before. All of a sudden, they’ve got an opportunity and they’ve fallen behind academically. That happens, so there are multiple programs in that state that I’ve recruited over the years.”
Johnson arranges official visits
According to Phil Kornblut, 2017 DE/OLB Brad Johnson will take four official visits this fall.
Pendleton (S.C.) High School coach Paul Sutherland told Kornblut that Johnson will visit Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
“He said as soon as he sees them all, those other four, he feels like he’ll be ready to make a decision,” Sutherland said. “He’s not dragging this thing out to Signing Day. South Carolina is recruiting him harder than anyone, followed closely by Virginia Tech. The others are in contact with him every week. I’ve never seen a head coach work like Will Muschamp in recruiting.”
Because Johnson has taken several unofficial trips to South Carolina, he hasn’t planned an official visit.
More in-state recruiting movement
The crop of prospects from South Carolina in the Class of 2018 is as strong as a group that’s come through the state in a while.

The crop of prospects from South Carolina in the Class of 2018 is as strong as a group that’s come through the state in a while.
- A week after writing about Dillon (S.C.) High School QB Brayden Hawkins, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect let SEC Country know that he’ll be in Columbia next weekend for the East Carolina game.
- Within a couple of hours on Tuesday night, DL Stephon Wynn added a pair of SEC offers to his list: LSU and Ole Miss.
- OL Kavesz Sherard, his classmate at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C., picked up an offer from Virginia Tech.
