Statement from South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner:

"Today, I want to make it clear that Will Muschamp is our football coach and will be our coach going forward. President Caslen and I are fully supportive of his leadership and his development of student-athletes on and off the field. Coach Muschamp and our staff are dedicated to the success of Gamecock football. They have built a program where our team plays for each other and for our University, and they deserve our support. While we wish the outcome of some of our games would have been different, we are excited about the future of our program."

Let me throw this out.

The season has two games remaining on the schedule, starting with a Saturday night clash with Texas A&M (6-3, 3-2 SEC) and ending with a visit from No. 3 Clemson (10-0) on Nov. 30. The Gamecocks (4-6, 3-4 SEC) aren’t favored to win either game, meaning a 4-8 finish is possible in Muschamp’s fourth season. His contract is through 2024 and has a current buyout of $19 million if USC were to make a move and part ways with Muschamp after this season.

The timing of Tanner’s statement comes as the public and media have debated whether or not Muschamp would be the Gamecocks’ coach after this season.

Members of the USC board of trustees told The State earlier this week — and after a Gamecock loss to Appalachian State — they were split on whether the school could afford such a hefty buyout.

President Caslen then told The Greenville News on Wednesday that Muschamp “will be my coach through the end of the season” and then receive the usual evaluation. His comments weren’t universally viewed as an endorsement for Muschamp.

Tanner’s statement, giving apparent stability to the coaching situation, comes just over a month from the start of the first football signing period (Dec. 18). The Gamecocks’ in-progress 2020 recruiting class currently ranks No. 19 nationally.

The team is staring at its worst season since 2015 — the year before Muschamp arrived — and its second-worst since the infamous 0-11 campaign under Lou Holtz in 1999.

Translation:  "If there was an easy and cheap way to $hitcan him, we would".

They should have just said he's our guy or no comment from the get go.  Yet more amateurish handling of a coaching situation by the university.

I am very unhappy with this seasons results with the exception of the Georgia game. But, I still think that Champ can get the job done. This was a very difficult schedule and that should be taken into account.  We lost three games we were favored to win and that is what makes me unhappy. The real question should be how long will it take to recover the status of the program if we give up on Champ and start all over again.  I, for one, think that giving up on Champ may do more bad than good.

I understand your concerns especially on recruiting. Signs already. But all Boom needed to do was beat App. St. This not the fans fault. I wish I could say Boom is our man. But if it goes to 4-8. Just cannot see him able to recover and safe this years recruiting class. I hate to see us start all over again but this might be the best time to do it instead of waiting till next year.

We're pretty selective who we let into our fanbase...

I have been a Furman fan since the late 50's early 60's. I built a diode radio when I was young. The only station it would pick up was WQOK in Greenville. They carried all Furman sports back then. I would lie in bed at night under the covers and listen to Furman sports.

I really struggle with this.  I recognize it's a results based business, but other than W's, I think Muschamp has been good for the program.  Academics are way up for the team.  Seems to bring in good character athletes -- there's been very few incidents of players being knuckleheads in public.  Program seems to be run in a more "professional" manner than I can ever remember, and has a staff that understands the social and marketing components of a program.  Recruiting seems to be solid.  As far as I can tell, he checks every box...except for the wins.  The defense, which was non-existent the last couple of years under Spurrier and the first couple under Muschamp, have definitely improved.  The most glaring problem seems to be with the offense, which was the best part of this team his first two years and has gone down hill each of the past two years.

I'm hoping that an improvement on the offensive side can be made, without throwing out both the baby and the bathwater.  At the end of the day, I'm glad I don't have any input into the job evaluation.

You've got me beat by a few years, but I was a definite fan and student during the glory years of Dick Sheridan and Jimmy Satterfield as head coaches.

I would rather them wait at least one more year for a couple of reasons.

1st, Champ does have a top 20 recruiting class coming in and the two previous classes seem to be excellent.  That will be 3 solid classes in a row and would give a new coach something to work with if a change is made after next year.

2nd, because of the new early signing period in December it makes it way way harder for a new staff to put together a decent 1st recruiting class.  It’s not like it used to be.  Make a change this year and this class will fall apart leaving a huge hole for the next coaching staff that will cycle through the program for 4 years.  I’d rather wait a year so the new coach can have those 3 solid classes to work with instead of making a change this year with only the two really good classes and then whatever he can salvage from this one.  I just think it would set the next coach up a little better with regards to talent to work with.

I don’t think Muschamp will survive next year but I do see value in waiting one more year.

Years are long and life is short.  If we can make a homerun hire then I say we make the move at the end of the year.  If no one remotely promising is available then I'll reluctantly say give Muschamp one more year.

Not sure I get your logic. So if we cannot find a good hire (before we fire Muschamp), then we retain an underperforming coach? You always fire, then hire.

You realize we're at risk of a total implosion similar to the Brad Scott debacle?

Here's a novel idea: Reassign WM, and promote Tavaris as an interim HC. Tavaris is already making the $$.

This is a not cost to us and at least we have fresh blood at the top. If we still suck, make another change at the end of next season.

Maybe WM might be amicable to renegotiating his funding and move on.

It worked for LSU.  They didn't get Jimbo, so they waited.

I don't want a new coach just for the sake of a new coach.  Muschamp will continue to bring in very good recruits, which should be a good selling point to whomever our next coach is.
