The Steve Spurrier call-in show takes place on a Tuesday this week this Thanksgiving being this week.
Segment 1
Spurrier says things have gone well in practice but it's only Tuesday instead of Thursday. Connor Shaw didn't practice today, Jadeveon Clowney did practice today.
Spurrier says he was asked today why the Gamecocks have beat them the last three years and he says it's because they've played well. Hopefully we can play well again.
Any change to defense with Venables? They've got a little different type stuff than most people, but for the most part everyone does about the same things. Defense gets put right back on the field, because the offense scores so fast. There were four punts in NC State game by each team and we only had three against Wofford -- faster paced game with more plays.
Segment 2
Steve in York calls in and says that he's glad Todd is the play-by-play man. He also thanks Spurrier. He wants to know if they can "wheel a player in behind Clowney" since he's a dominant player to stop anything that might be in that direction or something like that. I went to York but I'm not claiming Steve - Spurrier says who knows what's going to happen. Have to be able to stay on the field on offense and try to play well defensively.
Hampton in Lexington says that he had a car wreck and hurt his toe so he knows how Connor and Clowney feel. ... He wants to know if the offensive line is going to be able to block Clemson. Spurrier says Clemson has given up some yards but has also been on the field a lot. Kenny Miles had a great game last week and hopefully he does again.
Segment 3
John from Long Island, NY wants to know if Spurrier has thought about putting the defense on the field first if they win the toss. Spurrier says they go back and forth on it. This week against Wofford it was windy so they decided to defer and got the three-and-out but then threw a pick. Generally like to get it and go, but if it's breezy we'll go on D.
Spurrier says when you get a defensive score you normally win.
Wish we could throw the ball around better. Right now we're just limited a little bit.
Kenny wants to wish the team well and says if they tackle good and play good fundamentals then they'll win. Spurrier says, Kenny, we hope you're right.
Spurrier says Clemson's offense is talented all the way around - at all the positions. They make a lot of third downs. They stay out there and score a lot. Again, everybody can be stopped if you have the right defense called at the right time and get pressure and tip some balls.
Segment 4
Lester in Gaston wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and wants to know how you prepare for an offense like Clemson's? Spurrier says you have to get some pressure, get off the field on third down, don't give up big plays. Offensively have to score some points. Two years ago it was 29-7 but doubt it's going to be low scoring this year.
Alan in the Upstate wants to thank coach for his hard work and tenacity and patience with the program. Alan wants to know if they've talked to the refs about holding not being called. Spurrier says they've turned it in a few times and sometimes they said yeah should have called it and other times they said no could have gone either way.
Spurrier says Clemson hit them with a trick play four years ago where the guy hit on the side. You call that a trick play but it's perfectly legal.
Segment 5
Keith in Myrtle Beach says that the Gamecocks' best defense is to stay on the field as an offense.
Spurrier says Happy Thanksgiving to all the Gamecocks. Have had a nice home season. No matter what happens last two games, it's been a good season.
I appreciate the students staying after the game, Spurrier says. That was the most fun alma mater singing in all eight years, Spurrier says. Students did a super job last week.
Quincy in Columbia wants to know what the school can do to get the bye week moved up so that it's not so late in the year. Also wants to know why they play the in-state schools with the schemes they run. Spurrier says it was time to play Wofford. Might have been better to play Western Carolina, they've been struggling this year. Was looking that Georgia Southern played Georgia and Georgia Southern had tied with Wofford in their conference. Georgia Southern vs. Georgia was a close game for the first half too.
Segment 6
Buddy in Union says Happy Thanksgiving. Gives a shoutout to Marcus. Buddy says that teams have had success throwing short quick passes over the middle against Clemson. Spurrier says maybe we should do that. Spurrier then gives a shoutout to Steve Taneyhill and his Union County team.
Keith in Matthews says he hopes the senior, who have won three in a row, are ready to be leaders. Spurrier says they're handling this Clemson game the same way they have the last three.
Segment 7
It's a huge rivalry, Spurrier says. It's been going on over 100 years. When we were independent, that was the big game of the year by far. Now we have a bunch of SEC games too, but now that we're out of that race this is the big one.
Spurrier says the team will have lunch with the children from the Epworth Hospital on Thanksgiving, then practice Thursday afternoon, then practice a little Friday. Stay in Greenville and head to Clemson Saturday afternoon.
