If you didn’t know any better you might think USC was playing Arkansas this week, not UAB. Steve Spurrier mentioned the Razorbacks almost as much as the Blazers in his weekly press conference Tuesday. That’s because UAB coach Garrick McGee, who is in his first season in Birmingham, spent the past four seasons working on Bobby Petrino’s staff at Arkansas.

The Hogs have had USC’s number the past few seasons, so using Spurrier’s logic, that means UAB now knows the formula for taking down the Gamecocks as well.

“Their coaches, including the head coach, was at Arkansas the last several years so they know how to beat the Gamecocks,” Spurier said. “They’ve beaten us thoroughly, Arkansas has the last few years. From what I understand this coach they have knows the formula to kick our butts. …Coming from Arkansas, they’ve made us look like an average bunch of stiffs the last two years. We’ve really gotten clobbered.”

The Gamecocks are 2-0 and fresh of a 48-10 win over ECU last week, a victory Spurrier said Tuesday isn’t as impressive as some may think.

“After reviewing the tapes of the game last week we didn’t play all that great at all, Spurrier said. “We could’ve thrown for 600 yards against East Carolina if we were sharp. It was better than what we usually do, but it wasn’t anything to brag about.”

Oh yeah,if you plan on going the game Saturday night, Spurrier said again he’d prefer you not leave until at least the fourth quarter regardless of the score or heat index. “If the most important thing is just coming and drinking out the parking lot, you don’t even need to come in to start with. You don’t even need to come into start with if you’re only going to stay for a half I would think.”

Saturday night’s game kicks off at 7:00 at Williams-Brice Stadium.
