 Summer storylines for Gamecocks

Major South Carolina recruiting weekend

There are a handful of significant 2019 prospects scheduled to take official visits to South Carolina this weekend, most of whom would play on the defensive side of the ball for the Gamecocks.

The following have been confirmed by SEC Country:

  • 4-star DE Joe Anderson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
  • 4-star DE Savion Jackson (Clayton, N.C.)
  • 3-star ATH Jammie Robinson (Cordele, Ga.)
  • 3-star LB Derek Boykins (Concord, N.C.)
  • 3-star T Anthony Whigan (Lackawanna C.C.)
Those are the non-committed targets. At least two commitments from the 2019 haul could be in town, too. Three-star outside linebacker Jahmar Brown, who committed last Thursday, has made arrangements. Five-star defensive end Zacch Pickens, another commitment from last week, might also make it to campus.

If SpursUp Surveillance had access to the feature on 247Sports, Anderson, Boykins and Robinson would have Crystal Ball selections for the Gamecocks.

California dreaming

Four-star cornerback Chris Steele will not be in Columbia this weekend. Instead, he’ll head to Muschamp’s former team in Gainesville, Fla., to take an official visit with the Gators.

But that doesn’t mean South Carolina won’t have Steele on campus at some point before July when his recruitment reaches a conclusion. Oklahoma and LSU have already had him on campus for official visits. Trips to Miami (June 16) and Southern California (June 23) have also been arranged for later in June.

The St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) prospect could schedule another unofficial to South Carolina. Clemson, which offered earlier this month, could also slide in for a last-minute visit.

However, as we’ve suggested in this space: South Carolina’s chances of reeling a second California commitment will decline if he doesn’t visit again. Fortunately, for the Gamecocks, he continues to tell folks he will be back.

Rounding out the offense

With a quarterback, wide receiver, tight end duo and three linemen on board, South Carolina’s 2019 offensive haul is close to being complete. At this juncture, the Gamecocks are expected to try to add one more wide receiver, a couple of linemen and a running back.

Muschamp Camp could be the catalyst in determining who might occupy those final couple of spots — wide receiver and running back, to be specific. Remember, South Carolina’s offensive staff used the camp last summer to evaluate, offer and recruit 3-star Tyquan Johnson, who signed last December.

Day 1 of the camp is set for Tuesday, June 5.

The Gamecocks coaches don’t need to see 5-star Quavaris Crouch go through camp, but one would have to imagine they’d love to have him back on campus at some point next month.

Come on back now

Not including the ones who were written about above, here are a few other guys SEC Country thinks South Carolina would love to have back on campus this summer:

  • 4-star DE Curtis Fann Jr. (Twin City, Ga.)
  • 4-star T Warren McClendon (Brunswick, Ga.)
  • 4-star LB Kalen Deloach (Savannah, Ga.)
  • 4-star S Jaylen McCollough (Powder Springs, Ga.)
McClendon, by the way, is slated to visit Auburn next week.

Dates to know

For a complete list of dates, Muschamp’s camp website offers a complete listing. But there are a few significant dates worth sharing below.

  • June 14, 15: OL/DL camps
  • June 14, 15: 7-on-7 tournaments
  • June 16: Specialists camp
