The best South Carolina recruiting present for Will Muschamp

Dec. 25, 2016

The old adage that it’s better to give than to receive doesn’t apply to college football. Fans who follow South Carolina recruiting know that to be true.

In this world where talent acquisition is the name of the game, it’s far better to receive gifts in the form of star recruits than not.

With 22 commitments already on board with South Carolina, just a few targets remain for the Gamecocks’ 2017 class.

What’s the best recruiting gift for Will Muschamp & Co.?

Muschamp’s staff already addressed the need for speed at wide receiver, defensive back and linebacker.

Adding more big guys is the priority as the Gamecocks hit the backstretch to National Signing Day. While there are five linemen committed, the South Carolina coaches want more on both offense and defense.

Javon Kinlaw kept South Carolina on his list even though he pulled the plug on his commitment to South Carolina. The former Goose Creek (S.C.) High School standout isalso considering Alabama and Southern Cal.

Kinlaw, who the Gamecocks placed at Jones County Junior College in January, will take official visits to all three schools in January.

Muschamp stays in contact with Kinlaw, the No. 1-ranked junior college strong-side defensive end.

Wyatt’s visit plan

Let’s go ahead and toss former South Carolina commitment Devonte Wyatt into the conversation. Now pledged to Georgia, Wyatt left the door open for the Gamecocks and plans to take an official visit next month.

Wyatt, a 3-star defensive tackle from Towers High School in Decatur, Ga., is also considering Alabama and Florida.

Gary’s Georgia alternatives

On offense, 4-star tackle Tony Gray is the top-rated remaining target. Gray, who is from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., continues to be courted by Georgia. Although the Dawgs are thought to be running ahead of the pack, Gray didn’t include them on his official visit list.

South Carolina, along with California, Missouri, Oklahoma and Florida wereannounced earlier this month as official visit destinations.

Gray visited South Carolina in the fall for the Tennessee game.
