The latest on 4-star DE Brad Johnson

Jan. 29, 2017

Pendleton (S.C.) High School head coach Paul Sutherland hasn’t gotten the word from 4-star defensive end Brad Johnson.

As of Sunday afternoon, the No. 3-ranked prospect from the state of South Carolina was still mulling over his finalists, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

“He and I will talk tonight,” Sutherland said. “He’s truly torn and he doesn’t have anything negative to say about either school. He really loves them 100 percent. That sounds crazy, but it’s true. He really loves them 100 percent, each school and each staff.

“I’ll talk to him tonight, but I don’t think anything will be decided. This is going down to signing day.”

Sutherland and Johnson last spoke on Friday.

“I told him that I was going to leave him alone,” Sutherland said. “He’s got a great family and he doesn’t need me. He said he was going to call me tonight. We’ll talk tonight. Other than that, he doesn’t need my help at this point.”

South Carolina zeroed in on Johnson as a priority for the 2017 cycle shortly after Will Muschamp arrived as head coach. The Gamecocks have hosted him for around 10 visits, including an official earlier this month. Virginia Tech had him in for an official visit in December.

“He’s just processing everything,” Sutherland said. “We didn’t think it would go this long, but I’ve always stressed to him that a commitment is a commitment.”

Sutherland added, “I’ll support him 110 percent wherever he goes. … but right now, it looks like it’s going to come down to signing day.”
