ATLANTA — Kentucky quarterback commitment Jarren Williams is among the 2018 prospects participating in this year’s Georgia Junior Bowl.
Williams, a 3-star from Central Gwinnett High School in Lawrenceville, Ga., committed to Kentucky in June, but he still keeps in contact with South Carolina.
The Gamecocks offered him while he was on campus this fall for the Tennessee game.
“It’s a great school. When I went up there, I talked with coach (Kurt) Roper … my dad was thinking about going back up there soon,” Williams said.
South Carolina hosted him for their upset win over Tennessee.
“(Roper) was just saying he wants to build a relationship with me first,” Williams said. “He told me to at least come up, see what they have to offer, and to show me around the campus and stuff. He said that I fit their system.”
Skinny: On Tuesday, Williams told SEC Country that he’s firm with his commitment to Kentucky. However, it would appear that the door has been left open for South Carolina. The Gamecocks could be in line for another visit within the next month or so.
Aaron Sterling has three official visits scheduled for January.
Updating Sterling’s recruitment
Former Alabama defensive line commitment Aaron Sterling is planning to take official visits to South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and “maybe” N.C. State. Sterling was unsure of the dates when he spoke with SEC Country’s Sam Spiegelman on Tuesday at check-in for the Under Armour All-America Game.
But this much is certain: South Carolina is very much in the mix for Sterling, who’s from Tucker High School in Stone Mountain, Ga.
“Very high,” he said, when asked about his interest in the Gamecocks. “Pretty high.”
According to Rivals, he is rated a 4-star prospect and ranked as the No. 13 weak-side defensive end in the class of 2017.
South Carolina’s staff is going full bore. Coach Will Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson are all recruiting Sterling to Columbia.
They tell him: “Get ready to become a Gamecock.”
“It means a lot that they actually feel that way about me,” Sterling said.
The staff believes he could play multiple positions.
“Basically, up and down the line, d-end, outside linebacker, defensive tackle. It doesn’t matter,” Sterling said.
Skinny: Tennessee is “up there” with South Carolina, but the Gamecocks are believed to have an edge on the Vols and the rest of the field, including the in-state school, Georgia.
