Excited about the future
Even if Tyreek Johnson didn’t already want to go to South Carolina, the choice probably wouldn’t be up to him.
The 3-star defensive end from Lakewood High School in Sumter, S.C., has four sisters. The three who are older all graduated from South Carolina.
Johnson has them in mind as he looks forward to continuing his football career.
“I want to actually get a chance to go to the NFL and actually do something for my family, and represent the school I came from, my hometown,” he said, “And also the Gamecocks.”
The No. 62-ranked strong-side defensive end in the Class of 2017 checked into the Shrine Bowl at 6-foot-3, 243 pounds.
South Carolina’s coaches aren’t exactly sure how Johnson will be utilized. Much of that will depend on what happens over the next couple of years.
“They say, depending on how big I get, I can play the Jack outside linebacker with the defense,” Johnson said. “They might move me to defensive tackle, if I get big enough.”
Johnson thinks he can reach 260 pounds. Whatever the scale reads, he’s excited to see what the future holds.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “I feel like I fit well in the system and to be a big part in helping them accomplish what they want to do.”
Chalmers could ‘bounce back’ at Carolina
Woody Wommack of Rivals put together an interesting look at five “bounce-back” junior college recruits who could make an instant impact.
South Carolina cornerback Kaleb Chalmers, who was dismissed from Clemson after a simple possession drug charge, signed with the Gamecocks out of Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Wommack’s list includes a few familiar names.
Former Georgia defensive end Chauncey Rivers signed with Mississippi State out of East Mississippi C.C. He was dismissed from the Bulldogs for “multiple marijuana-related incidents.” Former Florida State quarterback DeAndre Johnson inked with Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic. Jimbo Fisher dismissed Johnson after he assaulted a female at a bar.
Thompson prepares for May enrollment
Earlier this week, 3-star linebacker commitment Eldridge Thompson told SEC Country that he would not sign a letter of intent with South Carolina, but did not say when he would enroll at South Carolina.
On Thursday, the Coffeyville Junior College prospect told Phil Kornblut that he would arrive to South Carolina until May.
“I had some stuff on my math class and I won’t get that until May,” Thompson said. “But there’s no more recruiting period for me. I’m all South Carolina.”
Thompson will have three season of eligibility when he arrives to South Carolina in May.
Gamecocks land All-American honors
South Carolina offensive tackle commitment Dennis Daley was named first-teamNJCAA All-American. Cornerback Keisean Nixon, a Wednesday signee, picked up second-team honors.
Former commitment Javon Kinlaw, who recently listed a top 3 of Alabama, South Carolina and Southern Cal, also was on the second team.
Thomas reacts to 5-star announcement
South Carolina and Clemson are the finalists for 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas, the No. 2-ranked overall prospect in the class of 2018.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the top-ranked prospect, announced his commitment to Clemson on Thursday night.
Thomas, who’s originally from Florence, S.C., shared thoughts about Lawrence’s commitment

“It was pretty big. He contacted me over the phone before he made his announcement. Me and Trevor are pretty close and he told me wherever he goes he wants to bring a good group of guys with him,” Thomas said. “So it has a big imapct on my decision, yes. That is a huge get for Clemson.
