The other options at cornerback; games to watch
August 25, 2017
Now what?
Less than 24 hours removed from Jaycee Horn’s announcement for Tennessee, we’re left to wonder what direction South Carolina could head with the cornerback spot for the Class of 2018. Even though he’s on board with the Vols’ impressive class, the door remains open for the Gamecocks.
“I’m not going to shut [recruiting] down completely. I’m still going to take my [official] visits,” Horn said. “I’m going to be at Tennessee, though.”
With that said, the Muschamp flip watch could be in the works at some point down the road. Horn’s father, Joe, a former NFL wide receiver who’s now a junior college assistant coach, thinks highly of the Gamecocks head coach and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, so at least they have that working in their favor. Plus, Jaycee’s comfortable with the two coaches.
However, the way things stand right now, the younger Horn is more comfortable with what’s going on in Knoxville.
But there are other options for South Carolina to pair with Marlon Character Jr., a former Auburn cornerback who’s now committed to South Carolina. Among the top options are fellow junior college prospect Saivion Smith and Rock Hill-South Pointe (S.C.) 3-star recruit Steven Gilmore Jr.
Smith, a former 5-star recruit who began his career at LSU, is now enrolled at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His only two offers, for now, are South Carolina and Alabama, so the Gamecocks currently have a 50/50 shot.
Gilmore lists South Carolina among three other finalists: Georgia, Louisville and North Carolina, but there’s a question as to how much mutual interest he and the Gamecocks have in one another.
Another name to keep in mind could be JaKorey Hawkins, a 3-star prospect from Robert E. Lee High School in Birmingham, Ala. South Carolina hosted Hawkins over the summer for camp, but the contact from Columbia has since waned. Georgia Tech, Missouri and Penn State are also believed to be among the schools in the mix.
High school games to watch
Friday, Aug. 25
• Myrtle Beach (S.C.) vs. Charlotte Christian (N.C.) — Myrtle Beach
Stadium renovations have pushed the game up to 4 p.m., so if you’re in the Grand Strand area and off work early on Friday, this is a game worth watching at Ashley Booth Field.
Myrtle Beach features 2020 quarterback/athlete Luke Doty, who’s drawing interest from the Gamecocks. South Carolina has offered two 2019 prospects from Charlotte Christian: 4-star quarterback Garrett Shrader and 3-star safety Jeremiah Gray.
• Shelby (N.C.) vs. A.C. Reynolds (N.C.) — Shelby
Four-star 2018 linebacker Dax Hollifield leads Shelby in its home opener against an A.C. Reynolds squad that features 2018 defensive back Dre Dowdle, the younger brother of South Carolina running back Rico Dowdle.
• Spring Valley (S.C.) vs. Lower Richland (S.C.) — Columbia
Spring Valley and 4-star 2018 linebacker Channing Tindall return home after a big win last week at Fort Mill.
