This weekend, Gamecocks plan to give recruits a different look at USC

South Carolina’s and all of college football’s recruiting experience has been sped up.
Kids can sign earlier, they often enroll earlier and that means they’re coming to campus for visits earlier and earlier.
This weekend, the Gamecocks are set to host a small army of recruits. With that in mind, the staff and coach Will Muschamp aim to show the players something a little different.
Yes, the school recently finished a palatial $50 million operations facility, but that’s not going to be the centerpiece of things.
“This weekend for us is a little different,” Muschamp said. “We do a lot more on campus than we do around our football facility to be able to see our beautiful campus.”
The coach has often pitched the fact the players will have a football campus of sorts, with an operations building, practice fields and indoor building altogether. So why shift things away from that?
“Sometimes when they come on a game day atmosphere, they don’t necessarily get to see (the heart of campus),” Muschamp said. “We’ve got a great campus, and it’s really a good weekend for us to continue to build the relationships in our recruiting process.”
The Gamecocks have five committed for their 2020 class. The visit list this weekend will reportedly include the likes of four-star Arkansas commit Ze’Vian Capers, four-star tailback Tank Bigsby and former USC offensive line commit Javion Cohen.
It was only with the batch of new recruiting rules set in place last season that players could even make official visits in the spring semester. Players such as Ryan Hilinski, Jakai Moore and Zacch Pickens visited in late spring last year and ultimately became Gamecocks.
It’s meant a much busier part of the year for the assistant coaches. They have to be out and about, evaluating players on the road (head coaches cannot make those trips), and then have to come back each weekend to entertain for about 48 hours.
“It makes a for a long week,” Muschamp said. “We’ll start some of that this weekend the carry that through spring, but it is what it is. I think we’ve done a really good job with the spring visits. “I think it’s been very productive, as far as the young men that we’ve brought in on campus, in those situations, then been able to sign them on signing day in December or February.”
