Tight end target Traevon Kenion close to committing

Close to a conclusion
Traevon Kenion is nearing the end of his recruitment. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound tight end prospect from Monroe (N.C.) High School plans to reveal a commitment in May, but he’s pretty certain that his decision already has been made.
“It’s only really my parents that really know where I want to go,” Kenion said.
Several schools remain under consideration. South Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech are the primary contenders, with Louisville and Missouri also in the mix.
“I don’t want to go somewhere and regret going there, so I want to keep going up there and seeing, is this really where I want to be the next four years,” Kenion said. “That’s what I’m mainly looking for.”
South Carolina hosted him late last month during spring practice, and he is expected to be back on campus next weekend to close out April.
Kenion visited N.C. State last week, and a return to North Carolina is in the works.
The Gamecocks and Tar Heels are “definitely” recruiting him the hardest, but the Wolfpack are right there, too, he said.
According to the 247Sports composite, Kenion is ranked as the No. 32 wide receiver in the Class of 2019. He’s sixth among prospects from the state of North Carolina.
South Carolina recruiting efforts
Even though South Carolina already has a tight end commitment from 3-star prospect KeShawn Toney (Williston-Elko, S.C.), the Gamecocks plan to sign two in the Class of 2019. They haven’t signed a tight end since Will Register in 2017.
Tight ends coach Pat Washington is the recruiter of record.
“I love it down there,” Kenion said of South Carolina. “The feel, how I feel down there. It’s different from a lot of other schools and I love that feeling. I love the coaches down there, real cool coaches.
“They know what they’re talking about and they’re telling me what they would like to see me do. I like what they’re saying.”
The in-state suitors
Gunter Brewer was North Carolina’s recruiter of record before he left his post as co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach to coach wide receivers for the Philadelphia Eagles.
“I’ve definitely got to go up there again, because I love it up there, too,” Kenion said. “I have family that’s gone to that school and everything, and it’s not that far away. South Carolina and other schools are not that far away either. It’s convenient.”
Kenion, who grew up in a family of North Carolina fans, is being recruited to Chapel Hill as a tight end. North Carolina State views him as a hybrid tight end/wide receiver.
“It’s amazing at N.C. State,” he said. “The campus to the football side of it and the academic side of it. It’s the best of both worlds. And I love the coaches there, too. Anything I need, I can always know for sure I can ask them.”
