I should do some research and post his career stats but he was 2nd team All ACC his sophomore season and 1st team his Jr and Sr seasons. I believe he led the ACC in rebounding in all 3 seasons. Had by far the best stats of any big man we have ever had and scored the game winning bucket in our only ACC Tournament Championship. According to John Roche, he lives a very private life and does not return to any place else for salutations or awards and does not bear any grudge against us. Formerly, Dave Odom and Eric Hyman were trying to get Owens to return for a special ceremony to retire his jersey, wanting to leverage the occasion to sell some tickets since Odom wasn't able to sell tickets with a good basketball program. Those two "Gamecocks" preconditioned retiring Owens jersey upon his coming back to Columbia for the ceremony, but anyone with a heart and a brain - which excludes both Odom and Hyman - knows that an injustice was done by not retiring Owens jersey when Roche's was retired. Owens jersey should be retired and hanging from the rafters of the Colonial Life Center. It should happen at a halftime ceremony with other Gamecock greats in attendance whether Tom Owens is present or not. He is deserving of the honor and we should respect his privacy if he is not comfortable with the attention and publicity of making a public appearance. Now when is somebody at our University going to get this right?

He led the ACC in rebounding every year and also had the game winning basket to give us our only ACC tournament championship.

He's also known in Pacers lore as the guy that was involved in one of the worst trades ever with the Blazers. The Pacers traded their 84 first round draft pick for Owens. Owens was traded to the pistons a year after then retired following that season. The 84 draft was one of the most prestigious drafts of all time featuring John Stockton, Charles Barkley, Sam Bowie( who the Blazers drafted ahead of Jordan using the Pacers draft pick), Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Sam Perkins.

Thanks. We don't know much but that doesn't stop us!

Good post!! Been a long time but still remember John Roche & Tom Owens, fun years to follow Gamecock basketball......

Every six or so years we get a new coach and everyone says hallelujah. Show me the money.
