An important offer
Three-star cornerback Cam Smith finally received the news that he’s been waiting on since he was a little kid. On Wednesday, during the second session of Muschamp Camp, the 6-foot-1, 178-pound prospect from Westwood High School (Blythewood, S.C.) added an offer from South Carolina.
“It means the world, just because that’s where I wanted to go to as a kid, since that’s who I grew up rooting for. I’ve always wanted to be a Gamecock,” Smith said.
The No. 44-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite, arrived at South Carolina on Wednesday morning with several offers, including Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson delivered the word while meeting in the head coach’s office.
“They wanted to make sure I fit everything in their system, so they had me doing stuff, drills that they do during their practices and stuff like that,” Smith said. “They were just making sure I could do all those things and I moved well, so that’s what they were talking about at first.”
Growing up, Smith’s favorite Gamecocks player was wide receiver/punt returner Ace Sanders. While South Carolina might be the sentimental favorite, Smith does plan on seeing other schools this month, including the one in the Upstate.
Smith plans to reveal a commitment on Aug. 17, which is Westwood’s season opener.
Official visit set
Three-star cornerback Johnny Dixon (Tampa, Fla.) scheduled his official visit to South Carolina while on campus earlier this week. There’s a chance he’ll be back before the weekend of the Georgia game; that has already been penciled in as official No. 1.
On Monday, Dixon (6-0, 170) arrived for his second unofficial stop to see the Gamecocks. He stayed overnight before heading home on Tuesday afternoon.
“It was good. Everything went well. I just kind of talked to the coaches most of the time,” he said.
What was the message from Muschamp and Robinson? They want the No. 32-ranked cornerback in the country to jump on board with their 2019 class.
“I’m one of the top DBs they have listed, so they want me to get back up with my dad,” Dixon said.
Penn State is scheduled to host Dixon for an unofficial visit on Saturday.
Good first visit
A day after receiving an offer from Georgia, junior college cornerback D.J. Daniel (6-0, 180) began his first visit to South Carolina, a two-day stop that included on-field workouts at Day 1 of Muschamp Camp.
Daniel, who’s from Georgia, is a sophomore at Georgia Military College, where he was teammates with South Carolina junior defensive tackle Jabari Ellis.
“They were speaking of me committing, but all I could tell them is I have to really talk it over with my family,” Daniel told Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC. “Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed South Carolina. I’m definitely going to be right back here for one of my official visits — I know that for a fact.”
Kentucky will host him for a visit later this week before he sees Georgia and Tennessee next week. He visited the Dawgs this past weekend.
“Just coming out of high school and not really knowing much, I would probably say Georgia would have been my choice,” Daniel told DawgNation’s Jeff Sentell. “Being that I’m from Georgia. Everybody from Griffin in my hometown they look up to UGA and everything that they do. It is just a Georgia way for a lot of folks.”
Where do things stand now?
“I look at it not really in a different way,” Daniel said. “I still like Georgia. My family really loves Georgia. I’m just weighing all my options. That’s why I say that Georgia would probably have been the No. 1 for me coming out of high school.
“I didn’t want anything else but Georgia, but that was when I did not take the time to weigh out all my options like I will now.”
