Top 2020 RB Jordon Simmons enjoys South Carolina camp, crystal ball updates, and more

June 06, 2017

Whenever Will Muschamp lands a commitment, the South Carolina coach drops a #SpursUp on Twitter. Come to SEC Country for the latest news, notes and observations in South Carolina recruiting.

Jordon Simmons visits

Class of 2020 RB Jordon Simmons, whose older brother Tyler is a wide receiver at Georgia, visited South Carolina on Saturday for the first session of coach Will Muschamp’s summer football camp.

The younger of the two brothers was joined at the camp by some friends and teammates from McEachern High School (Powder Springs, Ga.), along with his dad, stepmom and stepsister.

“The camp went pretty good. The coaching staff treated me like I was family. They toured me around after the camp and showed me the stadium,” Simmons said. “I didn’t really get to see everything, so I was going to come back later on next month and probably later on during my season.”

Simmons, a rising sophomore, picked up an offer from the Gamecocks in May. Georgia also stepped forward with an early tender.

On Saturday, Simmons was timed at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard-dash and registered a 35-inch vertical jump. After the combine portion of the camp, he worked out for running backs coach Bobby Bentley.

“Coach Bentley is a good coach. During the camp, he had eyes on me and put me in first through all the drills, so he could keep an eye on me and watch my footwork and all of that,” Simmons said.

When the on-field activities concluded, Simmons and his travelling party met with Muschamp in his office.

“He was telling us to keep our grades, so we can maintain our scholarships,” Simmons said. “He was just telling us about the school and how good of a school it is.”

Simmons plans to camp at Tennessee later this week. Auburn is scheduled to host him for camp in July.

Crystal ball evaluation time

Since the calendar turned from May to June, several South Carolina recruits have received picks on the 247Sports crystal ball.

Below are SEC Country’s thoughts on those selections:

Auburn: 4-star WR Matthew Hill: That seems to be the consensus across the industry, especially after what he had to say last weekend. South Carolina remains in the mix.

Georgia: 4-star DE Stephon Wynn Jr.: At this point in Wynn’s recruitment, Georgia appears to be the safe bet, but South Carolina and Alabama shouldn’t be counted out.

South Carolina (2): 4-star CB Jaycee Horn: No word yet if Alabama’s regained the lead from South Carolina since a visit last weekend. Still not ready to rule out Tennessee.

Gamecocks welcome Reddy Steward

South Carolina, Mississippi State and Michigan are counted as the early offers for 2019 CB Reddy Steward.

On Friday, the 5-foot-10.5, 160-pound prospect from Austin High School (Decatur, Ala.) visited the Gamecocks. Assistant director of recruiting Shaq Wilson served as Steward’s guide around the South Carolina campus.

“Everything was real nice and they’re building a new facility, so I like that, too,” Steward said.
