Top Georgia targets return for spring game

April 03, 2018

A strong visitors list

Several top 2019 prospects from Georgia visited South Carolina on Saturday for the Garnet and Black spring game. All of the players listed below are 4-star prospects.

  • No. 9 Jaylen McCollough, safety (Powder Springs)
  • No. 16 Keiondre Jones, guard (Hogansville)
  • No. 27 Warren McClendon, tackle (Brunswick)
  • No. 28 Curtis Fann, defensive end (Twin City)
  • No. 34 Kalen Deloach, linebacker (Savannah)

Back again

Three-star defensive end commitment Rodricus Fitten (Atlanta) was there, too. The longest-tenured South Carolina pledge has played a recruiting role, as the Gamecocks continue pursuing Fann.

“He just talks to me, tells me to come there, that’s all,” Fann said with a laugh. “It isn’t really much of a pitch.”

That’s left for Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp.

“[Muschamp] always tells me that he needs me there, he wants me there,” Fann said.

On Saturday, Fann was joined by his mother, godmother and cousins.

“It was good. It was a great environment,” he said.

Fann, who checked in at 6-foot-2, 251 pounds last month at The Opening regional stop in Atlanta, liked what he saw from the Gamecocks on Saturday.

“I think they’re going in the right direction, which was expected,” he said. “They’re maximized on the defensive side and I think it’s going to show, going to show this year.”

This spring, Fann also has visited Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee. He plans to take more visits but hasn’t firmed up any plans.

Several factors will be considered as he nears a decision, though there is no timeline for a commitment.

“My relationship with the coaches and how my family likes it, but at the same time, it’s my decision,” Fann said. “I want other people’s opinions. … And just how the people act, just learning people.”

2-way player

South Carolina is recruiting McCollough to play two positions, one on offense and one on defense.

“When I talk to Coach Muschamp, he said he wants me to play both ways, running back and defensive back, that stood out to me,” McCollough said. “Other than that, I feel South Carolina is on the come up and they’ll be one of the teams to mess with in the SEC.”

South Carolina is the only SEC school that’s presented him with that option.

“It’s just different,” McCollough said. “I feel I can go up there and have an immediate impact as a freshman, so that’s always a factor. And it’s just a different atmosphere, a different environment.”

Muschamp has made a good impression.

“He’s just a cool guy, a defensive minded person and I like that,” McCollough said. “I know for sure the defense is going to be stopping people. He’s just real laid-back, real chill.”

McCollough added, “He really just says he wants me up there, it doesn’t matter what position or when, he just wants me to come play.”
And there’s a chance McCollough could link up with Fann and join the Gamecocks 2019 class.

“I talk to Curt almost every week and we catch up. We actually talk about South Carolina, Auburn, Georgia. We’re actually serious about South Carolina,” McCollough said.
