Thought South Carolina’s offense lacked imagination live yesterday so went back and looked- by my count SC ran 47 plays before falling behind in the 4th quarter... 39 of them were either runs or passes 5 yards past the line of scrimmage or less.

Sounds about right. When we stretched the field with Markway, good things happened.

It is as if we played to lose on both O and D. No adjustments on D. No imagination on O. The Team looked Lackluster. They looked like the Team that played Akron failing to score in the final 2 Qtrs. The Team that played UVa and failed to score at all. Now we have NC. There needs to be a serious evaluation by the Admin (Tanner) of the coaching staff(Top to Bottom).

Players appeared unprepared to play - that is Coaching.  There IS a lot of talent on this Team. How do you keep a talent like Hilinski on the bench, when your starting QB generates 1 passing TD. A fluke that the TE was totally open.  Our running TD was solely Feaster.

I just don't understand.

I am frustrated, as well.  I have never played football in my life, yet I can see things that are wrong.  I don’t understand how our staff doesn’t see it and correct it.  I think the thing that really bothers me is that Muschamp is known as a defensive guy, and yet, our defense doesn’t seem to get any better. If anything it has regressed.

I thought the light bulb finally went off when Boom came up with the "All gas, no brakes" mantra. But he rides the brakes all game long, just like he did at Florida.

He needs to focus on fixing the D, starting with taking more risks to get after the QB. Stack  the box, which helps with pressure on the QB and leads to TFLs on the RB.

And Offense - go for it on 4th Down and short, and throw the ball down the field. After we got the rushing TD, the downfield passes were there - and we ignored them until it was too late and we had to throw.

The team follows the lead from the top. You should play the game to win - we play the game not to lose, and when you do that, you lose. Spurrier won because he got the lead and went for the jugular - Boom goes conservative.
Ace, I love the way you explained that. Based on his actions, Muschamp’s motto should be “No gas, and ride the brakes!”

Coaching was awful.  I watched Auburn / Oregon game and kept shaking my head and asking “why can’t we do that”  5 yard passes going 20 yards because they are well thought out and put the ball into playmakers hands in space.  We have playmakers, we have a garbage playbook.

Our defense is so bland and lacks any imagination. We largely line up in a base look, often with DBs 10 yards off the LOS. I’ve seen so many teams this weekend with creative play calls, mixed up looks, pressure from all angles and we face a true freshman QB in his first outing and don’t try and disguise anything or really make him think... pathetic.

F Clemson but I love how imaginative and aggressive Venables is on defense.  Players love that style where they can attack and play in a creative defense. Wish Boom would do that but I don’t think it’s in the cards.

I know a lot of our defensive scheme had to be dialed down due to some injuries. But damn, we should have been able to beat unc without half of our starters. I really have a problem with our coaches right now. There too many things on both sides of the ball we are not doing that are basic little stuff, tackling, blocking, bad angles, tipping off your intended direction on defense and a bad offensive game plan.

DITTO!!

Muschamp's fingerprints are all over this offense. His safe, by the percentages bullshit will never allow an OC to really do what they want to do. Maybe now with Hilinksi there will at least be a QB that can get rid of the ball and give the receivers a chance...but coach has got to get his hands out of the offense. Muschamp might be the worst in-game coach in CFB right now. He has no ability to read the momentum of the game and no ability to get his players to respond. Scary ass play calling on offense and defense, playing the percentages means Muschamp ball will always be @ .500 at SC. The man is not a head coach. But luckily SC locked him in so nobody else will take him away lol

Not a 100% accurate assessment of Champ.  I do agree we need to be more aggressive in play calling but more than anything we need to be more creative.  Our O is too easily predicted and defended.  Champ did say they called quite a few downfield passes during the unc game.  The defense just got far too much pressure up the middle of our OL disrupting the entire play.  For the D, we did man up on several plays and put extra bodies in the box.  They didn't make the tackles in the run game even with the help and the DBs got beat on some plays.  When we did play zone, unc attacked the holes against our smaller defenders.  Our line on both sides of the ball was a huge disappointment in that game.  Both got pushed around.  The unc running game frustrated me because many times we'd have them for a loss or short game, only to allow a broken arm tackle or quick cut to an open hole.   Overall Mack's staff out coached the entire USC staff.

Excellent point.

That's kinda the point, Muschamp keeps getting outcoached. It's a trend at this point. His game and situation awareness is as bad as his motivation and preparation. I agree tackling was a huge problem with the defense. But with a defensive head coach who's known for his intense practices...something doesn't add up there. It is also obvious Muschamp has input on play calling when the team is playing with a lead in 2nd half

Running RPOs on 3rd and long is as dumb as it gets. You should be running max protection an the backer should be picking out his block from the snap. Pisses me off.

Spurrier was the master of understanding the flow of the game and always knew the right call to make at the right time.  We do not have that.  I agree that we need to let the offense be the offense.  I keep wondering if we need to let Werner play a bigger role in the offense.  I really thought that was a good move by Champ when he brought Werner in I really thought he could help mentor Bmac, but now I just really have no idea.

We do have that with BMac if CWM would let him do it. Go and look at games that we had good offensive outings. Our offensive scheme reminds me of the Holtz days. When Skip Holtz was allowed to call the game we scored. When coach Holtz got involved we didn't move the ball. I was on the sidelines during a few games during the Holtz years and let me tell you it was a war between Skip and his Dad. Half of the time the offense didn't know what the hell to do because Skip and Lou were still arguing about a play call. I think we have the same thing going on now.

Posted this in the VIP. After reading what $Billz said here is so true what he has said let me add this to the mix.

This is what I am talking about with Champ need to look at himself as part of the issues here right now

My thoughts on Champ and would love to see him lose this label that goes back his tenure at Florida: He coaches not to lose rather than coaching to win. That is a defensive coaches style most times. However when you do that, you generally lose. Its kind of like playing a prevent defense with 3 minutes to go, all it does is prevent you from winning. Other words let the offense play ball to the end and keep the Defense on there toes. Don't kill momentum when you have it. All great coaches no how to keep the pressure while containing their teams flow of the game.

Let me conclude this not the answer to all, but it would be a start with the many of the issues this program as a whole is dealing with.

Muschamp is way too proud of his defense to be letting them win games at this point. Playing as a dominate defense works if you have 5 star talent at every position, but other than that it is all about points. Playing not to lose is the most uninspiring style of football and momentum is @ 80% of it when you are dealing with college athletes.  Muschamp's teams take on his persona from the top down and it is clear he micromanages the offensive philosophy. Muschamp needs to stay out of the offense and worry about his defense. I will say there is nothing wrong with running and throwing the ball 5 yards or less from the line of scrimmage...the problem is when you take 4-5+ seconds to do it. Jake was notorious for holding on to the ball too long trying to make something big happen. Meanwhile all the areas the defense is giving him are getting filled up because he takes too long. We need plays designed to have the ball gone on the last step of the QB drop (3, 5 or 7), keep the uptempo offense going downhill and keep the defense on their heels. Jake makes it easy for the defense to tee off on him too many times
