While the high school state championship games are a few weeks behind schedule, the contest of the Carolina’s is right on time. The 80th Annual Shire Bowl of the Carolinas kicks off this Saturday in a friendly benefit game to help raise money for children rehabilitating in the Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, SC.

The Shriner game at its core promotes unity across the Carolina’s for a noble cause, but it also celebrates the competition that only best athletes in each state can offer in a football competition.
The Head Coach of the South Carolina Shriner team and Newberry High School club, Phil Strickland joined SportsTalk on Monday to preview the tradition behind the game and how he leaned on tradition in first day of practice in Spartanburg, to get his squad ready for the contest.
This year Strickland’s team will relay on a strategy built around a strong secondary and running attack to continue South Carolina’s success in the Shriner bowl game (South Carolina leads the series 41-34-4).
