Updating Gamecocks’ top targets; more offers go out

Some of South Carolina’s top 2019 targets will be on campus Saturday, including 4-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. and 3-star quarterback Garrett Shrader.

Shrader, who recently spoke with newly hired quarterbacks coach Dan Werner, visited South Carolina several times in 2017.

“I’m just getting to know the new guys, [offensive coordinator Bryan] McClendon and Coach Werner,” Shrader told Phil Kornblut. “I talked to Werner for a little bit and I’ll be down there this weekend and talk to him some more, just trying to figure out what they are trying to do, what they are trying to have their identity as an offense.”

What might that look like? Shrader shared some details.

“They say they want to be a pro-style pass scheme with more of a spread-style run game with a little bit more tempo. That’s what they’re going for. That’s what I’m looking for,” Shrader said. “I’d probably add the running element, something that’s missing right now from the quarterback, just a little bit more power read, read option.

“I think I’d be a little bit more of a threat. That’s basically what they are trying to do, get Jake [bentley] to run the ball a little bit more.”

The Gamecocks hosted him in December during one of their bowl practices.

“It’s hard to beat SEC football 90 miles away,” Shrader said. “I like the school. They have all the majors I’m looking into. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s the right fit for me. I’m open, I’m not trying to rush anything. I’m very comfortable with South Carolina.

“I like what they are doing; they have a positive trend for them right now, winning nine games and a bowl game, but there are still some schools I need to check out.”

5-star update

According to The Charlotte Observer, 5-star running back Quavaris Crouch will visit Clemson this weekend. A trip to North Carolina is on the docket for next weekend.

“He could go to a multitude of places [on his birthday weekend],” Harding University High School coach Sam Greiner said. “And Georgia wants him to come, but he made a commitment to his [home state] school. [North Carolina co-offensive coordinator] Gunter Brewer is one of the best recruiters I’ve met in my life.

“The guys that are on him the best are Gunter and [south Carolina running backs coach] Bobby Bentley.”

Greiner told The Observer that South Carolina and Michigan are the leaders for Crouch, who’s also considering which side of the ball he wants to play at the next level.

Offers out

South Carolina’s handed out several offers this week and a few more went out to younger offensive linemen:

• 2020 RB Miles Friday — Stone Mountain, Ga.

Bobby Bentley relayed the message over the phone to Friday late Thursday afternoon. Friday (5-foot-11, 172 pounds) will visit the Gamecocks on the final Saturday of the month, for his first look at South Carolina’s campus. Bentley also plans to stop by Stephenson High School before the end of the month.

“I know about the football culture, for sure,” Friday said. “A lot of my big homies have chosen South Carolina, so I know it’s a special place.”

Those buddies include Jamyest Williams, the top addition from the 2017 signing class, plus freshmen Kingsley Enagbare and Jaycee Horn.

• 2019 DT Calijah Kancey — Miami

After announcing the offer on Twitter, Kancey (6-1, 230) then tweeted that South Carolina was a “real-life, dream-come-true offer.” According to the 247Sports composite, he is the No. 46 defensive tackle in the Class of 2019. Louisville and Rutgers have also offered.

• 2019 DB Christian Williams — Daphne, Ala.

Alabama and Michigan are among the top offers for Williams (6-1, 175).

• 2021 OT Micah Morris — Kingsland, Ga.

South Carolina was the first offer for Morris (6-4, 260).

• 2020 OT Avery Jernigan — Blackshear, Ga.

South Carolina also was first to offer Jernigan (6-3, 255).
