USC’s evolving recruiting pitch will include something ‘unique in college football’

While South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner has trumpeted the benefits the upcoming $22.5 million in Williams-Brice Stadium upgrades will have on Gamecocks fans, football coach Will Muschamp is focusing on the recruiting upgrades.
One in particular. Muschamp believes the new team entrance, which will be through a plexiglass tunnel through fans in the new “2001 Club.”
“I thought it was really good to have a unique entrance. I thought that would be great for fan base, great for our players. It’s something that is unique to college football and something I thought was important.”
The entrance is patterned after the Dallas Cowboys entrance in AT&T Stadium and will be the only one of its kind in college football, Muschamp said.
“Sometimes the bells and whistles matter,” Muschamp told the York County Gamecock Club during a Thursday meeting in Rock Hill.
South Carolina considered making the team’s walk through the “2001 Club” an open-air experience, but “if we don’t play good I don’t want anybody throwing something on me,” Muschamp said. The renovations will begin as soon as the 2019 season is complete and are expected to be finished in time for the 2020 season.
The Gamecocks’ recruiting pitch is much different now than when Muschamp took over before the 2016 season, he said.
“Now you are not selling a vision of what we’re going to be offensively or what we can be defensively,” Muschamp said. “We are selling things that are a little bit more tangible. There’s a lot of excitement on the recruiting trail.”
