USC in talks to extend apparel deal with Under Armour

July 10, 2015

While change is sweeping through some of the biggest athletic programs in the country, South Carolina looks set to remain in place with its apparel contract.

USC athletics director Ray Tanner said this week that the Gamecocks are talking with Under Armour about extending their agreement after it runs out on June 30, 2016. While nothing is finalized, USC has been talking only with Under Armour about clothing its athletes.

“No, there hasn’t been any conversation with any other apparel companies,” Tanner said. “We’re in conversations right now with Under Armour going forward.”

Apparel has been a hot topic lately, after Nike recently signed Tennessee and Michigan. Under Armour signed Notre Dame and has been reported to be finalizing a deal with Texas.

The Gamecocks have been with Under Armour since 2011 and while the current contract has less than a year’s life left on it, Tanner said the two sides are already talking about a new one.

“Under Armour’s been a great partner and their apparel is second to none,” he said. “We’ve had a great relationship with them.”

The contract has a four-year extension that can be agreed to by both parties once it ends. Tanner said that he’s seeking more than four years.

“I’m not as interested in the four years as I would be a long-term agreement,” he said.

Under Armour agreed to pay USC $6.2 million over six years when the contract was signed in 2011. Escalators took a starting base of $900,000 up by a total of $50,000 each year, ending in a $1.2 million payment for the 2015-16 school year.

Under Armour also gave USC an escalating product allowance that began at $950,000 and will be $1.1 million this year. Football coach Steve Spurrier received four payments from the company as well, ranging from $600,000 to $962,500.

Under Armour also agreed to promote the school and its apparel, at a cost of no less than $125,000 per year. Bonuses could be earned by finishing in the Collegiate Licensing Company’s Top 15 in product sales or field performance.

Michigan recently left adidas for Nike, where it will have the largest apparel contract in the country, according to athletics director Jim Hackett. Hackett did not release financial details, but if what he said is accurate, it could come in higher than the reported $90 million, 10-year deal Under Armour recently gave Notre Dame.
