Despite FLA tieing things up, I still like our defensive efforts.  Just ice cold shooting for last 5 minutes.

We’re playing well in every way except offensive rebounding.  Getting out hustled after our shots.  Otherwise, no glaring problems in our game tonight.  EXCEPT we can’t buy a bucket unless your name is AJ Lawson.

Virtually identical stats from both squads:  USC - 13-33 FG/4-15 3 PT/ 5-6 FT,

Gators - 15-31 FG/ 4-14 3 PT/ 6-8 FT.

LOL, that's the problem with not having any fouls for the 2nd half, but trailing at the end of the game. Now Florida has to mass-foul for about 5-6 fouls, just to get USC to the foul line, so THEY (Florida) can get the ball back.....

That was a pretty complete victory.  We played well on the glass (after my earlier comment), had tight D, and got points from Seventh to make up for the lack of play from others.  Plus Keyshawn was on fire defensively, as was McCreary.

Great win tonight!   Best played half of the season (second half).     I am very pleased, to say the least.    AJ was awesome.   Seventh was outstanding.   If he can play that way the rest of the season, I'll be thrilled.    He isn't a 3 pt shooter, but he doesn't have to be.  He's good at those medium jumpers.  Leveque and McCreary were good the second half.  Their best half of the year, imo.  Very gratifying win.   I'm encouraged.

Thanks, Nerf.  Didn’t see thread, so started a different one.  Will move over here now!
Yeah, I threw it up there right before leaving work tonight.

Great minds think alike!

Grabbed some dinner and brought it back to the house, washed the dishes, and flaked on the bed for a bit.

Turned on 107.5 expecting a losing effort, and dayum, we won.  For seem reason I thought the game may have started early since I turned the radio on during Derek's PG interview with Frank.

Surreal, man.

Frank was win one-lose one against Bill Self while at KState and he seems to be that way with Mike White now.  I'll take it!

Very happy and surprised we won. I figured we were going to lose when UF fan their lead up to 8. The guys were resilient and got it done though. You never know which Carolina team will show up. If we can consistently play this well, we will do some damage the rest of the way.

@markymark550 Yes, we definitely have the skills at each position to be a strong player in the SEC.  As you note, you never know which Gamecock squad will show up.  I would say that we're beginning to show signs of a more complete "team" mentality now than just a few games ago (vs. Auburn, for instance).  We were not playing defense as a team, and last night we suddenly were.

Offensively, we still need to pull a few more pieces together, but overall we're in MUCH better shape.  Keyshawn continues to look strong as a finisher at the rim and in his short-range jumper.  AJ has been our most consistent offensive weapon all season long.  Cousinard is still having his ups and downs, but his confidence with the ball seems to be building... he's taking better shots now.  Hannibal has settled down and started playing WITH the team instead of as a Lone Ranger.  Seventh, after an absolutely abysmal stretch of games, is suddenly showing life (11 vs. Vandy, 12 vs. FLA) and handling the ball much better.  Leveque, who has been the bane of my existence at times this season, had 7 rebounds and only 1 PF to match his 6 points last evening.  McCreary in 14 minutes of play had 6 points and 4 rebounds... not bad for a guy who hasn't strung together much PT or practice time over the course of this season.

In my estimation, the key piece that is still missing is the play of Minaya.  I'm not certain what is going on right now with him... he almost seems a step slow, or simply not in sync with what's happening around him.  That's not ALWAYS true... last night, he had that one play where he saved an out of bounds ball and threw it to the open AJ Lawson for a wide open 3 pointer.  But he's been wildly inconsistent the past 3 games, and that has landed him on the bench for stretches where his defensive prowess could certainly help the team (if he's in sync with everyone).

I think the big shocker for me recently has been the time on the court and the play of Nathan Nelson.  Nate had 13 minutes with one rebound, one assist and a THREE! last night (he also hit a three vs. Andy, but that one didn't stand out as much because of the stinging loss).  He's increased his minutes over the last 3 games (3 minutes vs. UGA, 8 minutes vs. Vandy, 13 minutes vs. FLA), and is showing some pretty tight defense when he's in the game for extended minutes.

All of the above to say... I like what I'm seeing from our squad recently.  If we get the same level of play from our starters, consistent play on both ends of the floor from Leveque, consistent play defensively from Minaya, and about 4-6 PPG more from Hannibal, we're looking at a turnaround in the season, IMHO.

aa, good wrap-up and thoughts.

Minaya is like Brea Beal in that he does everything for the team - play D, rebound, keep the offensive flow going - but he needs to be more aggressive and less unselfish on Offense. He needs to look for his shot and take it with confidence.

The Ladies are really coming on because Beal has made herself part of the Offense in the last few games. As good as he is outside of scoring, Minaya needs to be a threat for our offense to work the way it should. Sitting on the bench in the Second Half might help him see that - we were a better team because we got production from his spot.

I really like Couisnard but I think he will be better if we put Seventh and Trae at PG. Couisnard can still handle it a lot - having essentially two PGs in the line-up at any given time is a good thing. But Couisnard is a better shooter when he is spotting up - which is hard to do when you are also supposed to be the PG and set up everyone else.
@Ace Dilcock  I think we're more or less on the same page about Cousinard.  I almost see him as more of a combination of Duane Notice AND Hassani Gravatt - a guy who, like you note, takes a lot more set shots and three pointers but is also valued highly for his defensive capacity.  Him running the PG position seems a bit of a stretch at times, as I don't think he reads the floor well enough to see things in advance of them actually happening.  (It's an area that Sharife Cooper excels in, and to some extent, I think that Scottie Pippen, Jr does as well... reading what his teammates are going to do well before they do it, and leading them to those spots by his own actions).

If Cousinard plays a second PG, but isn't responsible for the primary ball-handling skillset for the team, I think he becomes a MUCH more valuable player for us.  He's got the raw talent to be another Duane Notice, IMHO.  Heck, he's at almost 12 PPG average right now AND he's handling duties that would not be on his plate as much.

Couldn't agree more on Minaya.  He's the "glue" for our team, and needs to be taking a LOT more shots than he is.  I was encouraged to see him spotting up for 3's (though he missed them) against FLA.  Now he needs to drive to the basket and finish.  Add that element to his game, and like you note... he's more of a Brea Beal for us.  Which NEVER hurts... just ask Dawn Staley!  :)
