South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward was the nation’s 18th-highest paid assistant coach this season, according to USA Today’s annual analysis.
Ward, who is in his fourth season coordinating the Gamecock defense, earned $755,540 for the 2014 season. Ward was the fifth-highest paid defensive coordinator in the SEC, behind Alabama’s Kirby Smart, LSU’s John Chavis, Georgia’s Jeremy Pruitt and Auburn’s Ellis Johnson (who was fired following the regular season).
South Carolina finished No. 92 in the nation in total defense this year, allowing 433.6 yards per game.
Gamecocks offensive line coach and running game coordinator Shawn Elliott was the second-highest paid assistant coach on the staff. His $435,400 annual salary ranked No. 93 in the nation. Ward and Elliott are the only South Carolina assistants among the nation’s top 100 salaries.
South Carolina’s total staff payout for assistant coaches was $3.33 million this season – the 12th-highest in the country and fifth-highest in the SEC. The Gamecocks finished the regular season 6-6 and will play Miami in the Duck Commander Independence Bowl on Dec. 27.
